About thisMETER
Every measuring tool promises precision. thisMETER checks what the spec sheet actually guarantees, from accuracy and resolution to the safety rating, and explains which tool fits which job.
What we do
We research tools that measure: USB-C power meters, multimeters, clamp meters, voltage and outlet testers, plug-in watt meters, home energy monitors, cable testers and sound level meters. We read each maker's spec sheet and manual, check accuracy specifications and safety ratings against the standards behind them, and turn that into plain-English buying guides and how-tos. Our How we measure page explains how to read the numbers.
Who it's for
- Homeowners and DIYers checking outlets, cords and appliances.
- Apprentices and electricians choosing a meter they'll rely on.
- Electronics hobbyists who need small currents and fine resolution.
- USB-C users who want to see what a charger really delivers.
- Network and low-voltage installers testing cable runs.
How we research
- Official sources first: manufacturer spec sheets, manuals and instruction sheets, and the standards they cite, such as IEC 61010 measurement categories, USB Power Delivery and the cable-testing tiers.
- The fine print, read in full: accuracy for every range, the conditions attached to it, and what each tool can't do.
- Every claim checked twice: logged against its official source with the line it came from, then checked again independently. Anything that can't be confirmed is cut.
- Not lab-tested: we haven't put the products we cover on our own bench, and we say so. If we ever publish our own readings, each one will state the instrument, the setup, the conditions and the date.
What we don't do
- No pay-to-rank: brands can't buy a position or a mention.
- No testing claims we can't back up.
- No prices that go stale: the current price is always on the retailer's page.
- No live-mains or panel instructions: panel and hardwired work belongs to a licensed electrician.
How we're funded
Some links on thisMETER are affiliate links, mostly to Amazon. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide a pick, and there are no sponsored posts. Where we can't confirm that a retailer's listing is the right product, we link the maker's own page instead, which earns nothing. The details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Who's behind it
thisMETER is a small, independent research publication. There are no personalities in front of the products: every guide follows the same published method, and every correction goes to one inbox.
What we cover, and what we don't
- We cover tools that measure power, signal and sound: the categories listed above, plus how to read them.
- We don't cover medical devices, EMF health claims, water-safety testing, or installation and repair work.
Corrections
Spotted a wrong spec? Email info@thismeter.com with the product and a link to the maker's page or manual. We check it against the source and fix the guide, and the guide's Updated date changes whenever its content does.
