Privacy policy

thisMETER doesn't need an account and doesn't collect your name, email address or payment details unless you email us. Last updated November 1, 2026.

Who runs this site

thisMETER, an independent research publication. You can reach us at info@thismeter.com.

Visit statistics, without cookies

To see which guides help people, we count visits ourselves, without cookies or third-party analytics. For each page view we record:

  • the page, and the website that sent you (for example a search engine), plus any campaign tags in the link you followed;
  • your device type, browser and operating system, and a region taken from your browser's language setting;
  • how long the page was on screen and how far down it was scrolled;
  • words you type into our product finder;
  • an anonymous visitor code: a one-way hash of your IP address and browser details combined with a random value that changes every day and is deleted after two days. It lets us count unique visitors per day, but it can't identify you or link your visits across days.

What we never store

Your IP address is never stored in these records. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we don't create the visitor code at all. Known bots and our own admin sessions aren't counted.

When you click a link to a retailer, we record which link it was, the page and the spot on the page it was in, the time, and the same anonymous daily code. Once you're on the retailer's site, its own cookies and privacy notice apply (for Amazon, its Privacy Notice, linked at the foot of every Amazon page). The retailer may set cookies to attribute a purchase to us.

What's stored in your browser

There are no advertising or tracking cookies, and the site loads no third-party scripts or trackers. A few settings are kept in your browser, and clearing your browser's site data for thismeter.com removes them:

  • Theme (localStorage): your light or dark choice.
  • Saved and recently viewed products (localStorage): kept in your browser. They reach our server only if you choose to compare your saved items, as part of that page's address.
  • If you close the pinned top-pick bar on a guide, a note to keep it closed for that browser session (sessionStorage).

Server logs

Our web server keeps standard access logs, which include IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting. Log files are deleted automatically 14 days after they are rotated.

Email

If you email us, we keep your message only to reply and handle your request, and we delete it on request.

Your rights

We don't sell or share personal information, as those terms are used in California's privacy law (CCPA/CPRA). Visitors in the EU and UK have rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR, and visitors in Canada under PIPEDA, including the right to ask what we hold about you and to have it deleted. Because we don't hold personal data tied to you, there is usually nothing to find, but email info@thismeter.com with any request. This site isn't directed to children under 13.

Changes

If we add services or change what we collect, we'll update this page before the change goes live, and the date at the top will change.
