For most houseplant and garden owners, the decision is between a probe that stays in the soil and reports continuously, or a cheap dial you carry from pot to pot. Our multi-plant pick is the Ecowitt WH51, a wireless soil moisture sensor with a documented ±5% accuracy specification, app graphs and history, and per-soil calibration for up to 16 sensors on supported gateways. If you want a display with no phone and no app, choose the Ecowitt WH0291, a paired sensor and LCD console; the VIVOSUN 3-in-1 Soil Tester covers budget moisture, light and pH checks on one battery-free dial. Recommendations are based on makers' specifications and manuals, checked November 5, 2026; we have not physically tested these sensors.

Best multi-plant system: Ecowitt WH51

The WH51 is the pick for anyone who wants to stop guessing and watch the soil's moisture trend: it is a wireless probe that stays in the pot or bed and reports to an Ecowitt gateway, console or app every 70 seconds under normal operation, or every 10 seconds when it detects a significant data change. Ecowitt's product page and manual document what most plant "hygrometers" never state: a measurement principle (Frequency Domain Reflectometry), ±5% accuracy, 1% resolution on a 0~100% scale, a sensor reporting interval of 70 seconds and a minimum battery life of 12 months from one AA battery.

Because the probe sits in the root zone, it measures the soil your plant actually grows in, with no moving a handheld probe between pots with different wetness. The manual describes its calibration route: a custom mode sets the 0%AD (dry) and 100%AD (wet) endpoints for your soil type, and for consumer use Ecowitt recommends the simpler trend-based approach: watch the app graph, record your watering habits, and set personal dry and wet thresholds. The probe has no display; it is an accessory that works with a gateway (GW1000 or GW1100, sold separately) or a console, sending data on 915 MHz in North America, 868 MHz in Europe or 433 MHz elsewhere, with a 100 m (300 feet) transmission distance in open field and an IP66 waterproof rating.

The trade-offs: it needs the separate gateway for app readings, the AA battery is not included, and the manual warns against forcing the probe into hard, dry or stony soil. The manual says gateways can support a maximum of 16 soil-moisture sensors, with 16 channels available on supported, updated firmware. The shop page's older GW1000 description still says MAX 8, and the manual limits a mixed WH51 and WH51L set to eight sensors sharing eight channels.

Best no-app display: Ecowitt WH0291

The WH0291 is the answer when the deliverable should be a number on a shelf, not a graph on a phone. Ecowitt's product page and manual document a paired package: one wireless soil moisture sensor and an LCD display console showing the moisture value (0~100%, 1% resolution, 70-second update rate), a ten-grid flower pot icon graded from 4%~0% (no grids) to 100%~95% (ten grids), and the time.

The console runs on its own AA battery, the sensor on another, and the pair needs no gateway: the WH0291's limitation is the mirror of its simplicity. The manual states the display can only pair with 1 WH51/WH51L soil moisture sensor, and it is not equipped with a Wi-Fi module, so there is no app, no history and no remote alerts. Calibration lives in the console itself, with the same 0%AD and 100%AD custom-mode endpoints as the app route and defaults of 70 and 500. Households that later outgrow one plant should move to a gateway and WH51 sensors: supported gateways can track up to 16 sensors, while a mixed WH51/WH51L set is limited to eight.

Best budget probe: VIVOSUN 3-in-1 Soil Tester

For a first moisture check on a windowsill of houseplants, VIVOSUN's 3-in-1 Soil Tester is the budget pick: an analog probe that switches between soil moisture, light and pH with one button, needs no battery, and measures 10.8 inches long with the model name 305131J on the maker's spec table.

  • Moisture range 1-10 (dry to moist), light intensity 0-2000, pH 3.5-8 (acidic to 8 basic), per the maker's listed testing range
  • Plug and read, with a 2-year after-sale service listed by the maker
  • Design for testing soil only; the maker says not to test pure water or other liquids

The trade-offs: the moisture dial is a dry-to-moist scale, not a percentage, so it cannot be compared with a 0~100% sensor, and VIVOSUN publishes no accuracy specification for any of the three functions. Use it as a relative check between pots and watering days, not as a calibrated measurement.

Source: makers' specifications (linked in the product cards)

The strategist's shortlist included the Xlux T10, Sonkir MS03, Dr. Meter S10 and VIVOSUN's digital soil moisture meter. When we checked November 5, 2026, the makers' sites for Xlux, Sonkir and Dr. Meter no longer resolve, and VIVOSUN's current soil listing on its own site is the analog 3-in-1 tester above, not a digital moisture meter. We do not recommend products whose official specifications cannot be verified today: no spec sheet, no confidence in what you are buying. If those makers' pages return, we will re-check them.

How to choose a plant moisture meter

Match the sensor to how you actually water. Someone with two pots and a routine does not need graphs; someone with a greenhouse, raised beds or vacation absences benefits from continuous readings and a history that shows the drying curve. The WH51's 70-second normal reporting interval, and its 10-second interval after a significant data change, matter for monitoring, so buy it with the gateway.

Treat the percentage as soil-relative, then calibrate. Soil moisture sensors read the soil's interaction with an electric field, and different soils produce different raw values at the same wetness. Ecowitt handles this with custom calibration: set the 0%AD endpoint against your dry condition and the 100%AD endpoint against your wet condition. Its worked example converts a moisture AD of 310 into 56%: (310 − 70) × 100% / (500 − 70). An analog 1~10 dial has no such correction; expect it to be a rough relative check.

Trust specifications over feature counts. A document that states a measurement principle, an accuracy figure, a resolution and an update rate (the WH51 manual) lets you reason about readings. A dial with no stated accuracy tells you only that something changed. For wood and building materials rather than soil, our best moisture meters guide covers the pin and pinless instruments that job needs.

Buy the right plant moisture system
  1. Count your plants

One plant suits a console or a dial; several plants or remote beds suit a gateway with multiple sensors.

  2. Match the ecosystem

Check the RF frequency region (915 MHz North America, 868 MHz Europe, 433 MHz elsewhere) and gateway or console compatibility before ordering.

  3. Read the calibration path

Decide whether you will set custom 0%AD/100%AD endpoints for your soil type or work from the moisture trend.

  4. Plan the power

Confirm which batteries are included; the WH51 and WH0291 ship without them, while an analog dial needs none.

Placement, root zones and care

Probe depth and placement. The WH51's manual says to insert the sensor totally into the soil for accurate results, and to place it in a pre-dug hole to avoid damage in hard, compact earth, burying to the indicated depth mark on the body. The WH0291's manual repeats: the sensor should be inserted totally into the soil. For houseplants, that puts the sensing region in the mid-pot root zone rather than the dry surface layer; for garden beds and raised beds, match the depth the roots actually use.

Compatibility with houseplants, seedlings and beds. Ecowitt positions the WH51 for "indoor outdoor potted plants, lawn, garden and more," with its IP66 rating supporting permanent outdoor placement and a working temperature range of -10°C to 50°C. Seedling trays are the one place a big probe is wrong: the sensing element sits partway up the body, so a shallow tray reads mostly air. The pocketable dial tester is the better fit there.

Cleaning and storage. The VIVOSUN tester is for soil only, never pure water or other liquids, and Ecowitt warns against contact with stone or hard rock soil. Ecowitt also cautions not to mix alkaline, lithium, standard or rechargeable batteries, or old with new: over-discharged batteries can vent, leak and rupture. Remove batteries from products during long periods of non-use.

FAQs about readings, root zones and sensor lifespan

"Do I need calibration for accurate readings?" Different soils give very different sensor output at the same moisture level, which is why Ecowitt builds in the custom mode. Without it you still get useful trends; with it, the percentage maps onto your soil's own dry and wet points.

"What about a name conflict on channels?" The WH51 specification table and manual say gateways can support 16 soil-moisture sensors on updated firmware. The shop page's GW1000 description still says MAX 8, and the manual caps a mixed WH51/WH51L set at eight sensors sharing eight channels.

"Is a bigger scale number better?" No. A 0~2000 light range or a 3.5-8 pH range describes the dial, not accuracy, and VIVOSUN states no accuracy for any function. The Ecowitt pair states ±5% (WH51 manual) or nothing at all (WH0291 console); the specification, not the range, is what to compare.

How we choose

We compared makers' product pages and current manuals, checked November 5, 2026, prioritizing stated accuracy, measurement principle, calibration path, waterproofing and power requirements. The Xlux, Sonkir and Dr. Meter candidates were dropped because their makers' sites no longer resolve, so their specifications cannot be verified from official sources. These are research-based recommendations; we have not physically tested the sensors. Our selection method explains the process, and the family-wide approach lives on How we measure.

Verdict

Buy the WH51 when plants are many or far from the house and you want app graphs, history and alerts from up to 16 sensors on a supported gateway. Buy the WH0291 when one plant deserves a shelf display without a phone; Ecowitt lists its 0~100% range and 1% resolution but publishes no accuracy figure. Keep a VIVOSUN 3-in-1 dial for cheap relative checks and seedling trays. Whatever you buy, learn your plants' wet and dry points from the trend rather than chasing one universal number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reading on a plant moisture meter?

It depends on the scale. The Ecowitt WH51 shows 0~100% with a ±5% accuracy specification; the WH0291 shows 0~100% with 1% resolution, but Ecowitt does not publish an accuracy figure for it. Ecowitt's guidance is to learn your plant's wet and dry points from the trend graph rather than a fixed number: record the reading right after watering, and again when the plant shows its dry signal. A 1~10 dial, like the VIVOSUN tester's dry-to-moist scale, is not a percentage and cannot be compared with a 0~100% sensor. Water against your plant's needs, not the number alone.

Where should I place a soil moisture sensor?

In the active root zone, which for most houseplants means mid-pot rather than the surface. Ecowitt's manual says to insert the probe totally into the soil and keep it there 2-3 minutes before trusting a reading, and to place the sensor in a pre-dug hole rather than forcing it into hard, compact earth. For garden beds and raised beds, keep the sensor at the depth the roots actually use and check that hard or stony soil does not damage the probe.

How long do soil moisture sensors last?

The WH51's specification lists a minimum battery life of 12 months from one AA battery, and its body carries an IP66 waterproof rating for permanent outdoor installation. Ecowitt warns not to mix battery types or old and new batteries, since over-discharged cells can leak and corrode the compartment. Analog dial testers have no battery, so their lifespan is about the probe itself: keep any probe clean, and the maker's guidance for the VIVOSUN tester is soil only, never pure water or other liquids.
