Digital calipers are the fastest way to move from "about 30 millimeters" to an exact number, and the best one for most people is the Mitutoyo 500-196-32 ABSOLUTE Digimatic Caliper: hardened stainless jaws, a 0-150mm / 0-6" range, 0.01mm / 0.0005" resolution, a documented ±0.02mm / ±0.0010" accuracy rating, and an estimated five years of battery life under normal use (Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE-series brochure says approximately 3.5 years) on one SR44 cell. Around it we name four picks from their makers' own spec sheets: a shop-grade Starrett, an IP54-protected iGAGING, a fractional-readout Neiko for long-range work, and an easy-read iGAGING budget option. Because we link only what the makers document, every number below traces to an official product page or catalog.

Best overall: Mitutoyo 500-196-32 ABSOLUTE Digimatic
Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE Digimatic Series 500 is the reference digital caliper, and the 500-196-32 is its current US inch/metric model without data output. Per Mitutoyo's product-data table it covers 0-150mm / 0-6" with 0.01mm / 0.0005" resolution, ±0.02mm / ±0.0010" accuracy and 0.01mm / 0.0005" repeatability, in a 168g instrument with hardened stainless slide and jaws.
Two design details justify the pick. First, the ABSOLUTE linear scale eliminates the need for setting the origin every time the tool powers on, and overspeed errors are also eliminated — the slide has unlimited maximum response speed, so fast jaw travel cannot corrupt a reading. Second, the practical details are documented: an SR44 cell (Mitutoyo part 938882) — the current US page estimates about 5 years under normal use, while the ABSOLUTE-series brochure says approximately 3.5 years — and a 9.0mm-tall LCD character height for readability, plus a fitted plastic case.

The trade-off is range and price class: 0-150mm is the right size for electronics, 3D printing and general bench work, but the series also includes the inch/metric 500-507-10 at 1000mm / 40" (±0.07mm / ±0.0030" stated accuracy) if you measure long stock. Mitutoyo includes a thumb roller only up to and including the 300mm / 12" models, which this one has.
Best shop tool: Starrett EC799A-6/150
Starrett's 799-series electronic caliper — listed in the current bulletin as the EC799A-6/150 — is the machinist's option. Its catalog states that linear accuracy meets the DIN862 standard, at 0.0005" / 0.01mm resolution over a 0-6" / 0-150mm range. The body is hardened stainless steel for long life, with a fine-adjustment thumb wheel, a lock screw to hold the slide in position, and an integrated depth rod.
The EC799 adds genuinely useful electronics: inch/millimeter conversion reads .0005" or 0.01mm; the last measuring position is retained when shut off; it auto-OFFs after 5 minutes of nonuse; and it zero-sets at any position. Starrett's category page also notes output is now available on B models — the EC799B-6/150 carries an RS232 output for use with Starrett's DataSure wireless data-collection system. A protective case and a single long-life battery (accessory part PT99492, a 3-volt CR2032) complete the package.

If your shop is wet or dirty, note the family split: Starrett's 798 line has IP67 protection against coolants, water, chips, dust and dirt, and only the W798 wireless versions add a rechargeable battery port and an embedded radio for data — while the EC799 line itself does not publish an ingress rating.
Best for messy benches: iGAGING OriginCal 100-700-06
The iGAGING IP54 OriginCal is the value pick for real workshops: it carries an iP54 protective rating against moisture and dust, keeps absolute-encoding technology that memorizes the absolute origin zero, and — unusually at its price — offers SPC/USB data output for logging measurements. The 100-700-06 covers 0-6" / 150mm at 0.0005" / 0.01mm resolution with 0.001" / 0.02mm accuracy, in a stainless steel frame, with a 3V CR2032 battery included and a protective case.

Range variants are documented on the same page: the 100-700-04 at 0-4" / 100mm, the 100-700-08 at 0-8" / 200mm (0.0015" / 0.03mm accuracy), the 100-700-12 at 0-12" / 300mm, and the fractional 100-700-33 with a 1/128" display. That fractional model is also a strong 3D-printing caliper, since it reads wrench and fastener sizes directly.
Best long-range and fractional pick: Neiko 01409A
When 6 inches isn't enough range, NEIKO's 01409A covers 0-12" / 0-300mm with the same core numbers — 0.0005" / 1/128" / 0.01mm resolution and 0.001" / 0.02mm accuracy — on an extra-large LCD with one-button conversion between inch, fraction and millimeter. The maker states it is factory calibrated to 0.001" accuracy, with a finely polished stainless frame, precision-ground jaws, a depth probe, a knurled thumb roller, a locking screw and auto-off. It ships with two LR44 batteries (one spare) in a custom-fit storage case.
See the NEIKO 01409A product page
Its documented trade-offs: NEIKO publishes no ingress rating and no data-output option, so treat it as a bench and field measuring tool rather than a data-collection node.
Best budget stainless pick: iGAGING EZ-Cal 100-333-8
The iP54 EZ-Cal X-Large is the easy-read option for beginners: an easy-view X-Large LCD, resolution of 0.0005" / 0.01mm / 1/128" (so it displays fractional inches natively), a stainless steel frame, the same iP54 moisture- and dust-resistance rating, a 3V CR2032 included and a protective case. The 100-333-8 is the silver 0-6" / 150mm model at 0.001" / 0.02mm accuracy; the 100-333-8B is the black version of the same caliper. iGAGING also documents an 8-inch 100-200-8 (0.0015" / 0.03mm) and a 12-inch 100-300-8, plus a set pairing the 6-inch EZ-Cal with an IP40 0-1" digital micrometer.
How we choose
We work from makers' own documentation only: the Mitutoyo product-data table, Starrett's electronic calipers bulletin, iGAGING's spec pages and NEIKO's product page, plus the DIN862 standard that Starrett cites. We have not physically tested these tools, so every accuracy, range, resolution, battery and ingress figure here is the maker's specification, not our measurement. Picks must be current models we can trace to an official page, must document four-way measurement (outside, inside, depth, step), and must state resolution and accuracy separately. Where a maker's own pages use different names for one tool — Starrett's "799 series," "EC799" and bulletin-numbered "EC799A-6/150" — we keep both rather than silently picking one.
How to choose digital calipers
Match the range to your work
6-inch / 150mm calipers handle most electronics, 3D-printing and bench jobs; step up to the 8-inch, 12-inch or extended-range models only for long stock.
Read resolution and accuracy separately
Every pick here displays 0.01mm / 0.0005" steps, but stated accuracy differs: ±0.02mm on the Mitutoyo, DIN862 on the Starrett, 0.001" / 0.02mm on the iGAGING and NEIKO models.
Pick your readouts and extras
Fractional-inch display (iGAGING 100-700-33, EZ-Cal, NEIKO) helps wrench sizes; IP54 or IP54-class protection helps dirty benches; data output (iGAGING SPC/USB, Starrett EC799B) matters only if you log measurements.
Bench context matters too. If the caliper will live next to a multimeter on an electronics bench — measuring connector pitch, wire diameter or printed parts — the 6-inch stainless picks are ideal, and our guide to multimeters for electronics covers the instrument on the other side of the bench. For gifts, our mechanical-engineer gift guide pairs a caliper with other spec-grounded picks.
FAQ
The five questions buyers actually search are answered in the FAQ block above the article body — 3D-printing accuracy, rechargeable and left-handed availability, and the resolution-versus-accuracy distinction.
Verdict
For most buyers the Mitutoyo 500-196-32 is the digital caliper to buy: the accuracy, repeatability and battery figures are documented, and nothing else in its class publishes a cleaner spec. Spend up to the Starrett EC799A-6/150 when the tool is going into a machine shop and DIN862 matters; choose the iGAGING OriginCal when dust, moisture or data output matter more than pedigree; take the Neiko 01409A for 12-inch and fractional work; and start with the EZ-Cal X-Large when the budget is tight but the readout still needs to be big and the frame stainless. Whichever you choose, zero it against closed jaws before critical readings and trust the accuracy line, not the display step.
Frequently asked questions
Are digital calipers accurate enough for 3D printing?
Yes. Every pick here reads to 0.01 millimeter or 0.0005 inch per its maker's spec sheet, which is finer than typical printed-part tolerance. For filament checks and printed-fit work, a 6-inch / 150 millimeter stainless model with an inch/millimeter button covers the job; the iGAGING IP54 models add dust and moisture resistance for a workshop bench. Calipers are comparative tools, though, so close the jaws and re-zero before each critical measurement.
Are there rechargeable digital calipers?
Most digital calipers run on coin cells, not rechargeable packs. Starrett's W798 wireless versions of the 798 series are the documented exception here: the catalog lists a rechargeable battery port and an embedded radio, while the EC799 and the other picks use replaceable cells (SR44 cell for the Mitutoyo, CR2032 for the iGAGING models, LR44 for the Neiko). Mitutoyo's US page estimates about 5 years of battery life under normal use (its ABSOLUTE-series brochure says approximately 3.5 years), and the Neiko ships with a spare LR44, so battery cost is rarely a deciding factor.
Are there left-handed digital calipers?
None of the makers in this roundup publish a left-handed model, so we can't recommend one from official specs. In practice the digital readout matters more than scale direction: Mitutoyo, Starrett and iGAGING all document zero-set at any position, so the display can be zeroed wherever you start and read regardless of jaw orientation. If a mirrored body is essential, contact the maker directly before ordering.
Is 0.0005-inch or 0.01-millimeter resolution finer?
They are the same display step, and makers list the pair together: Mitutoyo quotes 0.01mm / 0.0005-inch, Starrett prints .0005-inch (0.01mm), and iGAGING and Neiko state the same pair on their spec pages. Resolution is the smallest displayed increment, not the accuracy; see the buying section for how the two differ.
What's the difference between resolution and accuracy?
Resolution is the smallest number the display can show; accuracy is how far the reading may sit from the true dimension. The Mitutoyo 500-196-32 resolves 0.01 millimeter but is rated to ±0.02 millimeter; the iGAGING and Neiko models resolve the same step and are stated accurate to 0.001 inch / 0.02 millimeter; Starrett states its EC799 linear accuracy meets the DIN862 standard. A 0.0005-inch display does not guarantee a 0.0005-inch measurement.
