For most microcontroller debugging, choose the Saleae Logic Pro 8: its documented eight-channel capture at 100 MS/s offers more timing headroom than the Logic 8 at 25 MS/s across all eight inputs. Choose the Logic 8 for slower buses, the DSLogic U3Pro16 for buffered digital capture, or the Digilent Analog Discovery 3 when analog instruments and signal generation matter too. These are specification-based picks; Saleae's conflicting threshold descriptions and DSLogic's unconfirmed US delivery deserve attention before ordering.

Sources: Saleae's Logic 8 datasheet, Pro 8 datasheet and capture restrictions; the U3Pro16 datasheet; and Digilent's digital-channel specifications. Saleae's peak rates require analog channels disabled. DSLogic's maker labels sampling rates in GHz/MHz; the table expresses them as samples per second.
Best for most firmware debugging: Saleae Logic Pro 8
The Pro 8 is our default when you want room for clock, data and diagnostic signals together. Its datasheet specifies eight digital channels, 100 MS/s with all eight enabled, and a 100 MHz maximum digital bandwidth. That bandwidth ceiling does not apply at every channel count: the maximum 500 MS/s setting needs four or fewer digital channels, analog disabled and USB 3.0.
Logic 2 adds protocol decoding, result filtering/search and an automation API. The included kit has two four-channel wire harnesses, sixteen test clips, a carrying case and a USB-3 cable. Black and red are colour variants; Logic 8 and Logic Pro 8 are different hardware models. The current marketing table also calls this model “Logic 8 Pro”; the datasheet and support documents call it “Logic Pro 8.”
Choose it over the basic model for Saleae's documented fast-SPI configuration. Choose something with more inputs if your worksheet exceeds its channel count, and read the threshold caveat below.
Check configuration with Saleae
Best for slower buses: Saleae Logic 8
Buy Logic 8 when its capture configurations meet your job, rather than assuming the Pro's software is necessary: both use Logic 2. The basic model provides eight digital inputs and a 25 MHz maximum digital bandwidth, but its 100 MS/s headline is available on only three or fewer digital channels. With every digital channel enabled, the documented rate is 25 MS/s.
That distinction decides a common purchase: Saleae's 25 MHz SPI example requires four channels at 100 MS/s or faster and specifies a Pro model over USB 3.0. Basic Logic 8 cannot meet that combination.
Its kit includes two four-channel harnesses, sixteen clips, a case and a USB-2 cable. Pick the exact Logic 8 model, not a listing for the original “Logic”; Saleae's datasheet index lists that original device under discontinued products. Do not buy on the promise of adjustable thresholds without resolving the conflicting official descriptions.

Best buffered capture candidate: DreamSourceLab DSLogic U3Pro16
Choose this candidate when channel count and onboard capture matter more than joining the Saleae software workflow. Its datasheet specifies sixteen digital inputs, 2 Gbits of hardware memory and a USB 3.0 connection. Buffer mode supports 1 GS/s on eight channels or 500 MS/s on sixteen; streaming supports 125 MS/s with all sixteen active.
These are different modes, not simultaneous promises. Uncompressed buffer depth is specified as 2G divided by enabled channel count; streaming depth is listed as 16G samples. Compare those conditions with your required recording window.
The official shop lists the model in stock with a USB-A-to-C cable, shielded flywires, sixteen hook clips and a case. The maker restricts support to orders from its official shop. The shop offers free shipping and free express shipping above stated order totals; US-specific shipping eligibility and delivery terms remain unconfirmed, so confirm those before ordering. The U3Pro32 is a separate thirty-two-channel model; select the U3Pro16 covered here.
Check delivery and kit with DreamSourceLab
Best multifunction bench tool: Digilent Analog Discovery 3
Choose the AD3 when you also need to generate digital patterns or inspect analog signals. WaveForms combines those instruments with sixteen digital I/O channels at up to 125 MS/s per channel. For passive observation, configure the selected pins as inputs: these are programmable I/O, not dedicated input-only connections.
The digital capture limit is up to 32,768 samples per channel, depending on device configuration. Continuous Record mode is different: Digilent specifies approximately 10 MS/s total into host RAM or 5 MS/s total to disk, dependent on the computer. Do not read the headline rate as continuous logging performance.
The standard kit includes a USB-C-to-C cable, a 2×15 flywire assembly, headers, labels and a project box. The academic option requires verification and has the same contents. The BNC adapter and oscilloscope probe are recommended accessories, not standard-kit items; add the appropriate clips for your target board separately.

How we choose
This shortlist compares official datasheets, software documentation and included-kit lists, without bench results. We prioritize the rate at the required channel count, compatible voltage thresholds and usable software over the headline sampling number. Document conflicts remain visible; availability gaps remain qualifications. See How we choose for the publication's method.

Choose the capture configuration

Check voltage and software
Match the switching level, decoder and computer before choosing the smallest sufficient model.
Separate thresholds, operating range and protection
A threshold determines whether a voltage is recorded as low or high; protection describes what the input can tolerate. Neither establishes maximum usable signal frequency.
Saleae has an unresolved documentation conflict. Its current marketing table advertises Logic 8 thresholds of 1.8, 2.5, 3.3 and 5.0 V and Pro thresholds adjustable from 0.6–4.5 V. Its electrical support page instead describes Logic 8 as fixed, with low/high levels of 0.6/1.2 V, and Pro settings of 0.6/0.9/1.65 V. The current PDFs repeat those electrical values; the Logic 8 PDF confusingly calls them selectable. Confirm the hardware revision and required switching behaviour with Saleae before ordering for unusual levels. Support also says every input shares the threshold setting.
DSLogic's shop specifies a threshold adjustable from 0–5 V in 0.1 V steps and an operating range of −0.9 to +6 V. Its ±30 V protection is conditional on the flywires. Digilent documents an AD3 input threshold of 1.4 V by default or 0.6 V for low-voltage signals; its digital inputs are 5 V tolerant. The AD3's ±20 V digital protection and Saleae's ±25 V protection are separate from their logic-level specifications.
Sampling rate is not signal rate or recording length
Saleae recommends sampling digital signals at least four times their bandwidth; DreamSourceLab recommends ten to one hundred times the signal frequency. These are the makers' respective recommendations, not an interchangeable guarantee for every waveform. Narrow pulses can disappear between sampling instants, as DreamSourceLab's sampling illustration shows.
This conceptual timing sketch shows a pulse missed between samples; it is not a measurement or a scale drawing:
Time →
Input _____|‾‾|________________
Samples | | |
Recorded LOW LOW LOW
For a purchase decision, use the maker's protocol-specific example and the actual enabled-channel rate. For capture length, Saleae says available RAM, signal activity and settings determine recording length; DSLogic separates buffer from stream depth, and AD3 separates buffered acquisition from slower continuous recording. Write down the time window you need as well as the clock speed.

Check Saleae's decoder list and OS requirements, DreamSourceLab's decoder examples and downloads, and Digilent's WaveForms page.
Saleae's terms prohibit unauthorized clones using its software. Decoder availability also does not settle the electrical interface: Saleae's inputs are single-ended, and its datasheets recommend converting differential signals with a suitable receiver before recording them.
- Yes: Confirm the exact decoder and its licensing or support status.
- Yes: Confirm the current application supports your computer.
- Yes: Check the supplied leads, clips and host USB connector.
- Partly: A protocol name alone does not establish electrical compatibility.
Complete the kit and know when to add a scope
Match the included leads to accessible headers or test points before ordering. Saleae and DSLogic list clips in their kits; Digilent's standard AD3 kit lists flywires and headers, with its analog BNC accessories separate.
For voltage shape and noise, use an oscilloscope: see our USB oscilloscope guide. For the related decision about charger voltage, current and power rather than board-level digital capture, see our USB-C power meter guide. Keep those tasks separate when choosing a tool.
Verdict
Choose Logic Pro 8 for most firmware work, Logic 8 when its slower full-channel capture is sufficient, and DSLogic U3Pro16 for buffered multichannel work after confirming delivery. Choose Analog Discovery 3 when digital debugging shares a bench with analog capture and signal generation. The right purchase is the smallest tool that satisfies your simultaneous signals, switching levels, capture window and software requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a logic analyzer or an oscilloscope?
Choose a logic analyzer to inspect digital states and decode communications. Choose an oscilloscope when you need to examine voltage shape or noise. DreamSourceLab explicitly distinguishes those jobs. The Analog Discovery 3 combines analog instruments with digital capture and pattern generation, so it suits a bench that needs both. Choose it for that flexibility, while checking its digital buffer and recording limits.
Is a 100 MS/s logic analyzer enough for 25 MHz SPI?
Only if that rate is available with the required inputs enabled. Saleae specifies at least 100 MS/s across four channels for its 25 MHz SPI example. Logic 8 reaches 100 MS/s only with three or fewer digital channels and analog disabled, so it misses that configuration. Logic Pro 8 meets the documented requirement over USB 3.0. Check channel count before comparing headline rates.
Can I use Saleae Logic 2 with an inexpensive clone?
Saleae's terms prohibit using its software with unauthorized clones. Treat the supported application as part of the purchase: Logic 2 for Saleae, DSView for DSLogic, and WaveForms for the Analog Discovery 3. A seller's compatibility claim does not establish permission to use another maker's software. Saleae also distinguishes its included decoders from community additions and the separately licensed I3C plugin.
How many logic analyzer channels do I need?
Count the signals you want to correlate in the same capture. A UART direction needs one input, bidirectional UART needs two, I2C needs two, and conventional SPI uses four. An eight-bit parallel bus plus its clock already needs nine. Add any reset, interrupt or extra chip-select signals to your worksheet before buying; ground connections are separate from the signal-channel count.
