The original III already detects peak-to-peak activity; calling it “DC only” without explaining that would hide a useful function. However, peak-to-peak voltage is a different measurement from AC RMS, which the maker’s comparison chart reserves for IV and Maestro.

Best for routine component work: III PP319FTCRED

Choose this package when you want battery voltage or ground at the tip, voltage/polarity indication, continuity and component activation without buying extra signal-diagnostic functions. The Americas PP319FTCRED page identifies the exact accessory kit.

Its inventory includes the tester with a 20 ft power cable, 20 ft extension, 3 in probe tip, battery clips, cigarette-lighter adapter and instructions; the description also includes a protective case. That makes it our starting recommendation when reach and connection accessories matter more than numeric resistance or injector readouts.

The original III’s instructions reproduced in Power Probe’s kit manual describe standard Power Probe mode, negative peak, positive peak, peak-to-peak and threshold setting. Peak capture is useful when the question is whether voltage changed during an intermittent fault; it does not supply IV’s dedicated injector information.

Trade-off: the manufacturer lists no ohmmeter for the original III, so do not buy it expecting resistance values from the continuity indication. If the missing job is measuring resistance, compare IV or the separately named 3 Plus before ordering.

See the III accessory kit at Power Probe.

Best for advanced circuit diagnostics: IV PP401AS

The Americas PP401AS page documents Power Feed testing, AC RMS, frequency/pulse-width measurement and dedicated fuel-injector and driver diagnostics. Power Feed displays battery voltage, probe-tip voltage and circuit resistance together. Injector mode adds injector on-time, inductive kick voltage, supply voltage and ground voltage.

These are stronger reasons to upgrade than the mode count: the III already has several modes, including a threshold-setting position. Choose IV when these extra readouts answer the fault you are investigating, rather than assuming a higher model number makes ordinary component activation better.

For measurements, the IV datasheet specifies 0.1 ohm to 10 kilohms and 1–9999 Hz. Its Power Feed test is specified at less than 30 mA; treat that as a diagnostic test, not proof that a connection can carry the component’s full operating load. That last distinction is our buying interpretation of the specified test current.

PPECT detects an open-circuit signal when used with an ECT2000/ECT3000; the base IV package’s inventory does not include that tracer. The separate PPKIT04 combines IV with PPECT3000 and accessories. Choose the combo only if tracing is part of the purchase.

Read the official IV manual for the selected mode’s activation and Power Feed requirements before using those functions.

Identify III, 3 Plus and the kit suffix before ordering

PP3CSRED is the original III’s simpler package: its listed inventory contains the standard cable, tip, clips and manual, while PP319FTCRED adds the extension and lighter adapter. Do not assume every offer labeled “Power Probe 3” contains the accessory kit.

Power Probe 3 Plus / PP3+ is a different model with integrated resistance measurement. Its own manual specifies zero to 25 kilohms, and its Europe product page specifies 0–60 V DC, rather than the original III’s 0–70 V figure. If ohms is your only missing function, consider Plus, but confirm the regional package: the linked Europe inventory does not list the original III accessory kit’s extension and lighter adapter.

PP405AS is described by the Americas store as IV in limited-edition colors; PPKIT04 adds a tracer. Compare the actual model and included equipment before treating a different suffix as an upgrade.

Power, input limits and protection: read these separately

The IV’s 8–30 V DC operating supply, −100 to +200 V measurement specification and 450 V maximum tip voltage are separate entries in its datasheet. The 450 V figure is therefore not a 450 V measuring range or a statement of household CAT suitability. Use these picks for the documented automotive DC applications; choose a suitably rated instrument for household work.

An 8 A thermal breaker also is not a current-measurement function or an instant cutoff at that value. For IV, the maker lists 10 A for 20 minutes before tripping, illustrating why the breaker must not be treated as universal circuit protection. Match the vehicle’s schematic and diagnostic procedure before applying power or ground.

The IV’s driver-test specification is a 50-ohm pull-up, while its floating-tip specification is 0.1 mA. Neither is permission to use the battery-power switch indiscriminately on computer wiring.

Buying guide: order a complete, compatible kit

The III accessory package includes its extension and lighter adapter, whereas IV’s datasheet lists the PPTK0029 extension, PPTK0026 lighter adapter and PPT5VA reference adapter as optional. IV’s included 23 ft cable, clips, 3 in tip, case and manual cover its base connection inventory. Budget your shopping comparison around the accessories you actually need, including suitable connector access for the vehicle.

  3. Check the instructions

Match the supplied manual and vehicle diagnostic procedure before applying power or ground.

When a passive probe or DMM is the better purchase

If you do not need power/ground output, use the test-light guide to make that simpler buying decision. If the missing measurement is current draw, choose that instrument separately: Power Probe sells a PPAMP accessory specifically to add inline DC current measurement. The III and IV inventories above do not include it.

Although the US IV product title contains “AC/DC Current,” its specification list does not establish a standalone amps-measuring range. Do not substitute the breaker rating for one. Compare instruments for the actual current job in our multimeter guide and clamp meter vs multimeter guide.

  • Yes: III accessory kit fits routine voltage, continuity and power/ground work
  • Yes: IV adds numeric resistance and advanced signal diagnostics
  • Partly: PPECT tracing needs the separate tracer or a documented combo
  • No: Breaker amperage does not establish current-measurement capability

How we choose

We compared Power Probe’s Americas package pages, maker datasheets and model instructions, including the original III section of its official kit manual. These are research-based recommendations; no physical testing or independently verified accuracy is claimed. The selection method and measurement policy explain our approach.

Unresolved maker conflicts: the original III global page gives a green-LED continuity threshold below 2K, while its datasheet says below 600 ohms. They also disagree on peak-capture timing units, so we do not rank transient capture speed from those figures. Check the supplied revision with Power Probe if either specification determines your purchase.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday: compare the same package

Save the exact model and accessory inventory before comparing holiday offers. For the III, require the extension, lighter adapter and case if you want the package recommended here. For IV, compare the base tester plus any missing extension, reference adapter or tracer you need. Check seller, warranty terms and returns at checkout; a sale label alone does not settle which complete kit is the better purchase. No discount or future offer is assumed.

Verdict

Buy III PP319FTCRED for routine component activation and voltage/continuity work with its useful accessory inventory. Buy IV PP401AS when Power Feed, ohms, AC RMS, frequency/pulse width or dedicated injector/driver diagnostics are the missing tools. Check 3 Plus separately when resistance is the main reason you were considering an upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

Is Power Probe 4 worth upgrading from Power Probe 3?

Upgrade when Power Feed testing, numeric resistance, AC RMS, frequency, pulse width or the dedicated injector and module-driver modes solve a job you actually have. Both models already apply battery power or ground to components. For routine voltage, continuity and component activation, our pick is the III accessory kit. An IV purchase also needs a separate check of extension-cable and adapter contents.

Is Power Probe 3 Plus the same as Power Probe III?

Power Probe describes PP3+ as a separate model that adds integrated resistance measurement. Its manual specifies resistance from zero to 25 kilohms; the original III is listed without an ohmmeter in the maker's comparison chart. Do not transfer Plus specifications or its package contents to PP319FTCRED. The Plus source linked here is the manufacturer's Europe store, so verify the regional package before ordering.

Can Power Probe III or IV measure amps?

Do not read an 8-amp breaker specification as an amperage-measurement range. The maker sells a separate PPAMP adapter to add inline DC current measurement to compatible Power Probe testers. Neither exact package's included-accessory list contains it. If current draw is the buying reason, choose the current-measuring instrument or accessory first, including its input limit and required connections.

Can I use a Power Probe on household electrical wiring?

Keep these picks to the documented automotive DC applications. The original III instructions expressly exclude household electrical systems. The IV datasheet separately lists its DC operating supply, voltage measurement range and maximum tip voltage; those figures describe different limits. Do not treat the largest number as permission to connect it to mains or as a household measurement-category rating. Follow the supplied manual for the exact mode and circuit.
