Choose the REED R8050 sound level meter for readings you will note yourself; choose the R8080 when you need a saved, timestamped history and USB downloads. For spot checks with a field-calibration accessory included, our pick is the R8050-KIT. All recommendations below are based on official documentation.
Quick picks
- Display readings: R8050. Data hold and MAX hold; our choice when no saved sequence is required.
- Saved readings: R8080. Internal logging and Windows software; choose it for a history you can download.
- Spot-check kit: R8050-KIT. Adds the R8090 acoustic calibrator and fitted hard case.
Choose the sound record before comparing features
Write down the output you must hand over. A number on a display, a timeline and an exposure result answer different questions.
Displayed maximum
The R8050 MAX function retains the highest detected reading; note the result and settings yourself.
Saved sequence
The R8080 stores sound-level datapoints with time and date stamps for later download.
Exposure metric
OSHA describes dosimetry as personal exposure sampling that reports TWA or dose; require the specified exposure method.
Neither these manuals nor a logging label establish that either REED model is a personal noise dosimeter. IEC distinguishes time-weighting, integrating-averaging and integrating instruments, so check the required measurement function separately from the class.
R8050 vs R8080: the comparison table
These are REED’s published specifications, not independently verified performance. The kit suffix changes the package; the included meter model determines the measurement functions.

Both specification tables start at 30 dB: the R8080 does not buy a lower published sound-level floor or a better headline accuracy figure. Its frequency coverage starts lower, but that is a frequency-range difference, not a lower decibel limit.
Choose matching weighting and response
REED recommends A weighting for general noise and says a much higher C-weighted reading indicates substantial low-frequency noise. Note the weighting with each result, and compare readings using matching settings. Both meters offer Fast at 125 ms and Slow at 1 s; these are time weightings, separate from the R8080’s recording interval.
The specifications also list a separate 500 ms response-time entry, with additional analog-display timing on the R8080. Keep these labels separate when reading the spec sheet. For short events, confirm that the required maximum or peak metric is captured rather than assuming a saved sequence will answer the question.
Best for display readings: REED R8050
The R8050 suits a spot-check notebook: data hold freezes the display, while MAX updates only when a higher reading is detected. It includes a windscreen, battery and carrying case; the calibrator is a separate accessory.
Do not confuse the tripod mount with a recorder: REED lists automatic shut-off after 15 minutes and no logging capability. For a history you can revisit without transcribing the display, choose the logger.
Range conflicts: the R8050 specification table gives a 60–130 dB high range; the operating instructions say 65–130 dB. The R8050-KIT page’s embedded meter heading says 35–135 dB, while that kit’s datasheet and the standalone manual say 30–130 dB overall. Ask REED to resolve these discrepancies if an endpoint determines suitability.

Best for saved history: REED R8080
The R8080 stores up to 64,000 datapoints internally with timestamps, with a selectable 1–60-second recording interval. REED documents recording on the meter and downloading later, as well as a separate live-PC mode.
Its ordinary package includes the windscreen, USB cable, PC software, hard case and batteries. Auto shut-off is disabled while logging or connected to a PC; that is not a promise of unlimited recording time.
Fast/Slow weighting and the logging interval are separate settings: Slow does not mean a whole-session average, and MAX is not a dedicated peak measurement. The product page advertises CAL Leq in PC software, and the software guide describes a LEQ feature over a specified period. That does not establish standalone integrating LAeq performance or personal exposure-dose calculations.

Best spot-check package: REED R8050-KIT
The R8050-KIT packages the R8050 with an R8090 calibrator, fitted R8884 hard case, windscreen and batteries. Choose it when you want the spot meter and calibration source together; it does not add logging to the R8050. If you already own a suitable calibration source, compare the standalone package instead.

Check the computer and saved-file handoff before buying
REED’s current software download page and product page list Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10/11; the software guide lists only through Windows 10. Native macOS and Linux support is not listed in those documents. If a listed Windows computer is unavailable, get an agreed download route before choosing this logger.
The instrument manual allows downloading the installer when no CD drive is available. REED documents loading instrument data, live tracking, graphs and Excel export. These sources do not specify CSV/XLSX extensions or promise USB drag-and-drop file access. Request a sample export if your recipient or analysis tool requires a particular format.
Set the meter’s date/time and recording interval before collecting a session; REC starts and stops logging. Clearing internal memory erases stored data. Use this workflow before relying on the recorder:
Prepare the computer
Download the official R8080 software and confirm installation on your listed Windows system.
Record a short trial
Set the clock, interval, weighting and range; start and stop the session on the meter.
Retrieve and inspect
Connect by USB, load the stored readings and check that the dates and session match your notes.
Export before clearing
Make the Excel export, confirm it opens and keep a backup before erasing the meter.
Calibration checks and a repeatable measurement
The separately available R8090 fits half-inch microphones, the size specified for both meters. It supplies 94 or 114 dB at 1000 Hz; both meter manuals call for the 94 dB reference, with the R8050 explicitly specifying 1 kHz. R8050 adjustment requires a screwdriver, which its ordinary product-page contents do not explicitly list; confirm it when assembling the package.
REED says the meters are calibrated during manufacturing and directs buyers to request a certificate separately. OSHA’s technical manual distinguishes periodic factory calibration from pre- and post-use field checks for its officers’ instruments. Follow the maker’s adjustment procedure, record your checks and arrange any certification your project requires.
Keep microphone position and settings consistent; REED advises holding the meter away from the body and using the windscreen to reduce wind errors. Check battery readiness before a session; OSHA specifically notes that a battery tester can help. Our household battery tester guide covers that separate tool. Record location, source, weighting, response, range and duration using How we measure.
When to skip both meters
For occasional screening on an iPhone you already own, try the free NIOSH iOS app before buying hardware. Its Type 2 standards claim requires a calibrated external microphone. See our sound level meter guide for the fuller app decision and audio-use choices.
For a brief specifying Class 1, continuous integrating measurements or personal dose, select an instrument and method explicitly documented for that output. Both REED meters carry the maker’s Class 2 claim; their manuals do not establish personal dosimetry or standalone integrating capability. A class label, spreadsheet or displayed maximum alone does not prove legal compliance.
How we choose
We compared REED’s official product pages, manuals, kit datasheets and software documentation, checked November 2, 2026. IEC and OSHA sources explain the distinctions between measurement functions, class and exposure records. These are specification-based recommendations, with no physical test results. We prioritize the required output, a usable download route and exact package contents, and disclose contradictions in the maker’s documents.
Verdict
Get the R8050 for display readings, the R8050-KIT when you also need its calibration source, or the R8080 for timestamped history with a confirmed Windows export route. For the logger and calibration source together, check the R8080-KIT package. Choose the record you must deliver before choosing the box.
Frequently asked questions
Is the REED R8080 more accurate than the R8050?
REED specifies ±1.4 dB accuracy and 0.1 dB digital resolution for both meters. Their meter specifications also share a 30–130 dB overall range. Choose the R8080 for internal logging, timestamps and computer downloads; those functions do not establish better accuracy. The R8050 kit page contains a conflicting range description, so confirm endpoints with REED if they determine your purchase.
Does the R8080 record audio or just decibel readings?
REED documents stored sound-level datapoints with time and date stamps, plus downloading and graphing through PC software. It does not document playable audio recording in these sources. Buy it to keep a numerical sound-level history, and choose a separately documented audio-recording solution if you need to listen back to an event. A displayed maximum on the R8050 does not retain that history.
Can I download R8080 readings on a Mac?
REED lists Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10/11 on its current product and download pages. Its software guide lists versions only through Windows 10. These documents do not list a native macOS or Linux package, and they do not establish support through virtualization. Arrange access to a listed Windows computer or obtain confirmation of your exact workflow from REED before ordering for exports.
Does an R8050 or R8080 include the calibration equipment?
The standard R8050 and R8080 contents do not list an acoustic calibrator. The R8050-KIT and R8080-KIT explicitly include the R8090 and a fitted hard case. The R8080-KIT2 is the tripod bundle, whose listed kit components are the R8080 and R1500. Check the full suffix, and ask separately for any required calibration certificate; REED treats certificates as a separate request.
