The TOPDON BT100 is our pick for most buyers choosing a 12V battery tester: its manual explicitly lists EFB alongside flooded, AGM and gel, and documents battery, cranking and charging tests. Choose the Foxwell BT100 Pro for battery analysis on its listed flooded/AGM/gel types within 100–1100 CCA, if you do not need those separate system-test modes.

Based on official manufacturer documents retrieved November 2, 2026. We have not physically evaluated either tester.

For EFB, choose TOPDON. For AGM, either has documented chemistry support: the required system tests and rating range should break the tie. Do not infer lithium compatibility from an AGM setting, or whole-bank 24V battery testing from a voltage warning or a different model's comparison-table column.

Both manuals require choosing the battery type and rating information. Use this buying sequence before comparing extra features:

Choose from the battery label outward
  1. Read the chemistry and nominal voltage

Match the exact battery type to the compatibility table; choose TOPDON for explicitly documented EFB support.

  2. Match the standard and rating

Select the label's standard, then check that its rating is within the tester's supported range.

  3. Choose the required result

Choose TOPDON for dedicated cranking/charging checks; consider Foxwell for the documented battery-analysis job.

TOPDON's full standards list comes from the BT100 column of its battery-family comparison, rather than the BT600 specifications elsewhere in that document. Foxwell's manual prints 100–1100 for its listed numeric standards and gives a separate JIS code interval. The cited TOPDON documents do not provide separate numeric intervals for every standard: verify your particular non-CCA label before ordering.

Select EN for an EN label and CCA for a CCA label, then enter the corresponding rating. Do not substitute amp-hours for a starting-current figure or invent a conversion when the required label information is missing. Ask the battery maker instead.

Best for EFB and system checks: TOPDON BT100

The reason to choose TOPDON is its documented combination of chemistry coverage and test modes. Its V2 manual identifies conductance testing and explicitly lists regular flooded, AGM flat plate, AGM spiral, gel and EFB. The sell sheet specifies 100–2000 CCA.

The battery result includes health, charge, voltage, CCA, internal resistance and the entered rating. Dedicated cranking and charging procedures add starting-voltage/time information and charging-voltage/ripple results. These are useful reasons to buy it when your question extends beyond the battery's condition.

The limitation is recordkeeping: the manual says it retains the last test result, not all testing data. Choose a different reporting workflow if keeping a history is essential. Nor does the wider rating range prove better accuracy; we have no independent accuracy comparison between these instruments.

Battery-analysis alternative: Foxwell BT100 Pro

Foxwell fits a narrower shopping list: a supported flooded, AGM or gel battery within its 100–1100 CCA range, with battery condition as the main question. Its manual describes battery-health and charging-status assessment and displays battery voltage when connected.

The decision messages distinguish Good Battery, Good-Recharge, Charge & Retest, Replace Battery and Bad Cell-Replace. In particular, its recharge/retest instructions give you a next step before treating a depleted battery as a replacement purchase.

The trade-offs are EFB support that is not established and no dedicated cranking/charging procedure in the cited manual. Do not upgrade from a working Foxwell just for an AGM label: AGM is already listed. We would upgrade for a required function or rating range the existing tool does not document.

The Foxwell manual's introductory Operations paragraph mentions “charging systems,” but its procedure sections document connecting the tester, Battery Test and language selection. We would not turn that general wording into an alternator-test recommendation. Battery charge status and a running-engine charging-system test answer different questions.

TOPDON's charging-mode reference table also warns that a poorly functioning battery can affect test data. A displayed charging verdict should therefore guide further investigation, rather than automatically identifying the part to replace.

Variants and similar names: check the complete label

TOPDON BT100W adds a separate app workflow. Its own manual documents standalone testing, Bluetooth/app operation and saving/sharing results. Those features do not establish them for the base BT100. Verify the current app, phone compatibility and report format before choosing the W model for recordkeeping.

Foxwell BT100 and BT100 Pro need a suffix check. Foxwell's manufacturer catalog page uses BT100 without Pro. This comparison follows the explicitly named BT100 Pro manual; we do not assume that an unsuffixed listing has identical firmware, specifications or contents.

Schumacher BT-100 is a separate load tester. Its owner manual describes a load switch and reading the meter under the applied load. It is not a TOPDON variant. Do not transfer its procedures to either electronic analyzer here.

Buying guide: winter conditions, clamps, display and reports

Check the operating temperature before a winter driveway test. Foxwell specifies operation at 0–60°C. TOPDON's V2 manual and sell sheet both start at −20°C, but disagree on the upper endpoint. TOPDON is the better documented fit below freezing; confirm the applicable range for the supplied unit rather than assuming unlimited outdoor use.

Check actual terminal access. Foxwell prefers testing at the battery terminals and warns that testing at remote jumper posts may give a lower reading. Before buying either tester, verify that its clamps can reach and grip your permitted connection points. Do not assume identical cable length, jaw opening or adapter requirements; obtain dimensions or a clear manufacturer photograph if access is tight.

Check the display and desired language. Both manuals specify a 128 × 64 display; Foxwell explicitly specifies backlighting, and TOPDON's BT100 comparison column also lists a backlit screen. TOPDON's V2 language menu lists English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian. Foxwell documents language selection with English as default; confirm your required language on the exact unit. We have no comparative visibility or button-feel findings.

Check the complete package and record workflow. Both manuals list the tester and user guide. Do not assume a case, adapters or reporting accessories are bundled. Both retain only the latest result, so save the information you need before another test. Neither cited base-model manual documents a durable export workflow; a review-data menu is insufficient evidence of printing or file export.

Before placing the order
  • Yes: Confirm clamp reach and terminal access for your vehicle
  • Yes: Confirm the supplied language and operating-temperature range
  • Yes: Confirm the package inventory and local warranty terms
  • Partly: If reports matter, request a sample file or printout and the exact workflow

When a shop assessment is more useful

If the battery passes but starting trouble continues, ask for a broader battery, starting and charging-system assessment. Midtronics explains that normal voltage cannot establish battery health and that a battery can meet its CCA rating while having inadequate reserve capacity. Neither a health percentage nor a satisfactory CCA result promises remaining service life.

Foxwell's Replace Battery explanation also acknowledges a poor battery-cable connection as a possible cause. Follow the vehicle and tester instructions for further checks before treating a message as an automatic replacement order. Our car-battery diagnostic guide covers the testing workflow; this page chooses the hardware.

How we choose

We compared TOPDON's BT100 V2 manual, BT100/BT200 sell sheet and the BT100 column of its family table with Foxwell's BT100 Pro English V1.00 manual. We prioritized chemistry, rating inputs, documented test procedures, operating conditions and recordkeeping. We excluded conflicting weight and dimension figures from the comparison and make no comparative accuracy claim. Recommendations are editorial judgments from documents; see How we choose and How we measure.

Verdict

Buy the TOPDON BT100 for explicitly documented EFB support, its wider CCA range and dedicated battery, cranking and charging checks. Choose the Foxwell BT100 Pro when its supported chemistry and rating range fit and you want battery analysis. For a different test method or broader shortlist, continue to our battery tester guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which tester should I choose for an AGM or EFB battery?

Choose TOPDON BT100 for EFB: its manual explicitly lists that type, whereas the Foxwell BT100 Pro manual lists flooded, AGM flat plate, AGM spiral and gel. Both document AGM support. For an AGM battery within both testers' CCA ranges, choose TOPDON if you also need dedicated cranking and charging checks; Foxwell is a battery-analysis alternative.

Does the Foxwell BT100 Pro test the alternator?

We would not buy it for that purpose. Its manual mentions charging systems in introductory wording, but documents a Battery Test procedure and language selection without a dedicated cranking, charging or ripple-test procedure. Battery charging-status information does not establish alternator-test capability. TOPDON BT100 explicitly documents separate cranking and charging modes, including ripple and loaded/unloaded voltage results.

Is TOPDON BT100 the same as BT100W or Schumacher BT-100?

No. TOPDON's BT100W manual describes standalone operation plus Bluetooth/app testing and saved reports. Those features should not be transferred to the BT100 covered here. Schumacher's BT-100 is a separate maker's load-switch instrument with its own operating instructions. Match the brand and complete model name, then verify any app and report requirements before ordering.

Does a good result mean the battery will last through winter?

No remaining-life promise follows from these results. Midtronics explains that normal resting voltage cannot establish battery health, and even a battery meeting its CCA rating can have inadequate reserve capacity. Treat a result as diagnostic information under the test conditions. If starting problems persist, seek a broader battery and charging-system assessment rather than relying on the health percentage.
