A circuit reading covers everything downstream of that circuit. Our buying implication: neither a branch label nor a phase reading identifies every appliance sharing it. For choosing between a panel monitor and a single-appliance meter, start with our home energy monitor guide.
Best for circuit coverage: Emporia Vue 3

Emporia
Emporia Vue 3 Home Energy Monitor
A panel-installed home energy monitor with two 200 A mains sensors and up to 16 circuit-level 50 A sensors that reports whole-home and per-circuit use, solar generation and net metering in the Emporia app.
Pick Vue when your question is which circuits account for consumption. Emporia separates mains monitoring from branch monitoring, with up to sixteen branch ports. Multiple Vues can be combined or nested when one device cannot cover the installation.
Choose the bundle explicitly. Monitor Only gives whole-service readings without branch CTs. The eight- and sixteen-sensor packages add that many 50 A branch CTs; standard split-phase packages include two 200 A mains CTs. Three-phase installations need a kit with three mains CTs. The monitor has the same branch capacity across bundles.
Count sensors before counting circuits. Emporia's manual recommends a CT on each pole of multi-pole breakers. A multiplier saves sensors but does not accurately monitor unbalanced loads. Paper example: eight single-pole circuits plus three two-pole loads need 8 + (3 × 2) = 14 branch sensors under the per-pole approach. That fits the sixteen-sensor bundle, before reserving sensors for separate solar production. This is a planning calculation, not a surveyed panel.
The purchase link uses the site's existing Vue record. Its verified identifier does not establish which sensor bundle the seller will supply: check the selected contents, and use the manufacturer's bundle selector if needed.
Best for local data: Shelly Pro 3EM V2
Shelly's US V2 listing specifies three 120 A transformers. The Pro 3EM family documentation describes standalone LAN/Wi-Fi operation, non-volatile history, an embedded browser interface, MQTT and JSON/RPC export. Choose this architecture when your priority is collecting data on your own network.
Three channels are a measurement budget. Channels assigned to service conductors are already doing that job; do not count them again as independently observed branch circuits. The optional neutral CT input is not an extra branch channel, and its CT is not included in the family package description.
Keep the model boundary visible. The store calls this package V2; the general knowledge base identifies Pro 3EM model SPEM-003CEBEU without that suffix. Confirm the supplied hardware and firmware against the family interfaces and dimensions before ordering. The Pro 3EM-400 and Pro 3EM-3CT63 have separate documentation; neither is the US V2 120 A package compared here. Do not assume CT interchangeability.
Check the exact package with Shelly. No verified Amazon identifier is available for this record.
Cloud accounts and internet outages: the important distinction
Emporia's architecture article says Vue has no local API or local server. Its app reads cloud data; Ethernet supplies another route to that cloud. An Emporia account also supplies the email address used for exports.
Emporia's store page says the device does not support local storage; its current offline guidance qualifies that wording:
- Under about 15 minutes: measurements buffer locally and upload when connectivity returns.
- Longer interruptions: the device keeps measuring, but the outage becomes averaged energy rather than recoverable minute detail. Emporia qualifies the accuracy of these offline measurements.
- During either interruption: the app cannot read the Vue directly over the local network.
Temporary buffering therefore differs from an accessible local archive. Emporia's current storage policy explicitly describes that limited on-device buffer.
Shelly's browser guide says local access needs neither internet nor Shelly Cloud. Its knowledge base documents a clock that preserves timestamps during an internet interruption. With the monitor and local network still powered, that supports the local workflow missing from Vue. Treat an internet outage and a power outage as separate requirements.

Shelly's descriptions differ. Ask which retention applies to the exact V2 firmware; don't turn either figure into a universal guarantee. Preserve your own archive before the applicable window expires.
For Vue, request CSV files through Export Raw Data to CSV in the app; a download link arrives by account email. Emporia's export guide says second, minute and quarter-hour files contain kW, while hourly and daily files contain kWh. Do not sum kW samples as though they were already energy totals. Align the time zone and billing window when comparing a utility bill.
For Shelly, the web interface downloads recorded data, while RPC provides a documented route for software collection. MQTT is another integration interface, not a promise of an indefinite archive. Home Assistant's official Shelly integration communicates directly with the device without a cloud connection. Vue supports Emporia's own device integrations, but its maker documents no local API; CSV export does not provide live local access.
Choose the question
Decide whether you need circuit totals, a short event trace or a long energy history.
Set the export routine
Emporia recommends weekly exports for minute detail. For Shelly, confirm the exact retention window and arrange exports or a collector before it expires.
Keep a usable archive
Save the files with their time zone, resolution and units; compare matching periods when checking a bill.

The aperture is the opening around the insulated conductor. Have the electrician record actual supply, current range, conductor dimensions, mounting and approval before ordering. Emporia's manual prohibits third-party CTs. The Vue sell-sheet contains an EV-charging standards paragraph; certification here follows Vue-specific help guidance.
- Yes: Exact supply and required current range match the selected system
- Yes: Manufacturer-approved CTs fit the conductors and enclosure
- Yes: Installer confirms mounting space and applicable local approval
- Yes: Sensor allocation and archive workflow answer your original question
- Partly: Unresolved physical fit or listing: obtain confirmation before purchase
Solar: specify grid exchange and production separately
Emporia's solar guide distinguishes net grid flow from total inverter production. Net metering can use appropriately located mains CTs; separate production needs branch sensing on the inverter's AC output. That uses part of the branch-sensor budget. The included CTs do not measure panel-side DC.
There is a documentation difference worth taking to the installer: the Vue manual says branch CTs are needed to calculate grid exchange; the solar help page says upstream mains CTs alone can net meter. Ask for a design matched to the exact solar connection and the totals you want displayed. Shelly's family documentation lists four-quadrant measurement and active returned energy; request the same distinction between grid exchange and production there.
How we choose
This is a document-based comparison, with no physical product testing. We checked official kit contents, electrical limits, interfaces, retention policies and manuals, and identified differences between general documentation and revision-specific listings. Accuracy headlines do not decide our picks: coverage and access must fit the job first. See How we choose and How we measure.
Verdict
Vue 3 is our circuit-coverage pick: choose the branch bundle deliberately and plan cloud exports. Shelly Pro 3EM V2 is our local-data pick when its exact hardware, CTs and approvals fit: its three channels and 120 A package require a different coverage plan. Existing Vue owners comparing generations should use the separate Vue 2 vs Vue 3 guide; this comparison is for a new installation. Our Sense guide covers that separate ownership decision.
Frequently asked questions
Does Emporia Vue 3 work without the internet?
It keeps measuring, but the app cannot read the device directly. Emporia says outages under about 15 minutes are buffered and uploaded after reconnection. Longer outages become averaged energy data, with lost detail and weaker accuracy assurances. That temporary buffer is different from an accessible local archive. Choose Shelly's documented local workflow if viewing data during an internet outage is essential.
Can Shelly Pro 3EM V2 monitor a 200 A service?
Do not approve the US 120 A kit for unrestricted 200 A mains monitoring. Its included transformers are rated below that service capacity; a low reading today does not establish full-range coverage. Have a licensed electrician and Shelly specify a compatible complete system. The separately documented Pro 3EM-400 is a different model, not permission to substitute transformers onto the V2 kit.
Does the Vue 3 sixteen-sensor kit cover sixteen circuits?
Only when each monitored circuit needs one sensor. Emporia recommends a sensor on each pole of a multi-pole breaker and warns that one sensor with a multiplier does not accurately monitor unbalanced loads. Budget by monitored conductors and the desired solar measurements. The sixteen branch ports are separate from the mains ports; extra mains ports do not become extra independent branch channels.
Can both monitors track solar import and export?
Emporia documents net metering and separate solar-generation measurement; the required sensors depend on the solar connection and which totals you want. Shelly documents four-quadrant measurement and active returned energy for the Pro 3EM family. Ask the installer to specify grid exchange and inverter production separately. Neither a solar-ready label nor a net mains reading establishes that all those quantities are measured separately.
