On this page · Quick picks: buy the focus arrangement first

For a first bench thermal camera for electronics, our pick is HIKMICRO Mini2Plus V2, paired with its optional HM-AHBR02 desktop stand and a supported USB-C host: its manual focus and documented 0.1 m minimum focus distance make a practical starting setup. Choose Thermal Master P3 for its adjustable macro arrangement, while treating the maker's tiny-target claims as reasons to investigate its optics rather than guarantees of fault identification.

Sources: HIKMICRO's model-specific Mini2Plus V2 datasheet and Mini2 V2 datasheet, plus Thermal Master's P-series manual and downloads and FAQ. Angular fields of view are the published lens specifications; they do not establish the P3's image footprint in its closest macro arrangement.

For a small cluster of components, start with the two manual-focus picks. For a broader board survey, consider Mini2 V2. That is our interpretation of the focus distances and fields of view, not a demonstrated minimum component size. For standalone cameras and general inspections, use our broader thermal-camera guide.

Best documented bench setup: HIKMICRO Mini2Plus V2

Choose the Mini2Plus V2, ordering model HM-TJ32-7RF-Mini2Plus V2, when you want a camera and an officially named desk-mount option. Its datasheet specifies a 256 × 192 detector, 25 Hz imaging, manual focus and a 0.1 m minimum focus distance. SuperIR is image enhancement; the detector dimensions remain the native-resolution comparison.

The narrower 25° × 18.8° view is our reason to favor it over Mini2 V2 for small board regions. The product page also advertises viewing objects as small as 340 microns with an additional desk stand. Treat that as a manufacturer viewing claim, rather than a guaranteed accurate temperature reading from every component that size.

Buy the camera and stand as separate items unless the package explicitly includes both. The datasheet lists HM-AHBR02 as optional. Its stand specifications describe an adjustable clamp with a 58mm to 100mm range; check the device you intend to clamp. Stand adjustment and lens-to-board working distance are different checks.

The trade-off is the specified minimum distance: this is our choice for a supported bench arrangement, not a promise of extreme close-up performance. HIKMICRO lists Viewer for iOS/Android and Analyzer for Windows; use the compatibility checks below before buying a phone for it.

Best adjustable macro option: Thermal Master P3

Choose the P3 USB-C model for supported Android and iOS devices when an adjustable macro arrangement takes priority. Thermal Master's P-series manual gives P3 manual focusing, a 256 × 192 detector, 512 × 384 X³IR output and 25 Hz imaging. The maker's comparison on the P2 page separately labels P3's arrangement Macro Adjustable Lens. These are P3 specifications, not upgrades to the original P2.

How close? The FAQ describes seeing circuit-board burrs at 8mm. That supports considering P3 for closer viewing, but the fetched documentation does not establish a calibrated macro measurement footprint, depth of field or complete stand package. Ask for a sample image of a target comparable to your board, with working distance and visible image width, before relying on that close-view claim.

The manual documents direct USB-C connection or a supplied multifunctional adapter cable, and connection to a Windows computer using the supplied adapter cable. Confirm the exact phone and included connectors; do not assume that every separately advertised adapter or clamp belongs in the camera package.

There is an app-name inconsistency: the manual and Download Center call the P-series app Thermal Master, while the FAQ's computer section calls it Temp Master. Follow the official model-specific download route. The manual also asks Android users to check USB OTG support and enable it where required.

See Thermal Master's P3 catalog page and open the official setup downloads.

P2 Pro and Mini2 V2: when the alternatives fit

Thermal Master P2 Pro: the manual specifies a magnetic macro lens and Android or iOS compatibility. However, the maker's current navigation labels P2 Pro Canada Only. We therefore do not make it a default US purchase recommendation. Where available, confirm the exact host version, macro lens and supported working distance before ordering; the fetched manual does not supply that last figure.

Original P2 is different: the same manual lists a fixed lens for P2 and manual focusing for P3. Keep the manufacturer identity too: documentation for an Xinfrared P2 Pro is not evidence for a Thermal Master package.

Mini2 V2: HIKMICRO lists a focus-free lens, 0.2 m minimum focus and 50° × 37.2° view, and names computer cooling among its applications. We would consider it for wider board regions or cooling patterns. For the small-component job, our preference is Mini2Plus V2's closer, manually focused arrangement; moving the focus-free model inside its specified minimum distance is not a substitute.

How we choose

We compared official model-specific datasheets, the P-series specification columns, manuals, phone compatibility lists and the named mounting accessory. These are document-based recommendations; the close-view figures remain manufacturer claims. We favor Mini2Plus V2's documented bench arrangement and P3's adjustable macro optics, while keeping unresolved package and measurement limits visible. Our selection method explains the approach.

Buying guide: choose useful detail, then the complete kit

Native pixels, focus and field of view answer different questions

The compared cameras share 256 × 192 native detectors. P3's 512 × 384 output is separately identified as X³IR; HIKMICRO identifies SuperIR as enhancement. Compare native detail first, then ask how much board the focused image covers. Our buying inference is that concentrating the view on the relevant region matters more here than choosing the largest processed-image dimensions.

Ask the maker for image width at your intended working distance, the nearest usable focus and any clearance the macro attachment needs. A whole-board picture and a detailed component picture are different purchase requirements. The published angular view alone does not settle the image area in an undocumented macro configuration. Avoid treating digital magnification or a visible tiny hotspot as proof of a valid spot-temperature measurement.

Match the actual host, including the app version

There is a material conflict in HIKMICRO's documents: the hardware datasheet lists iOS 14 and later, while its newer compatibility list lists iOS 15.5 and later, an A11 processor or later, and Android 7.0 and later. Check your exact phone in that list and confirm the current app requirement. The list also directs Android 10.0 users to a specific APK.

Lightning changes the bench setup. The HIKMICRO manual says its Lightning adapter and Type-C extension cord cannot be used together. For an attachment positioned away from the phone, choose a documented USB-C arrangement or confirm an alternative with HIKMICRO first. A Windows computer is another documented host route; do not infer support for another desktop operating system from the connector.

  • Yes: USB-C host checked against the exact camera's compatibility documentation
  • Partly: Lightning support does not establish support for an extension-cord setup
  • No: A matching port alone does not confirm the app, adapter and camera combination

If you already own a camera, investigate a documented compatible accessory before replacing the instrument. That separate decision belongs in the thermal camera macro lens guide; this page chooses a first camera and host setup.

Save useful records and confirm the electrical cause

HIKMICRO's manual documents editing snapshot parameters, including emissivity, distance and environment temperature, and generating a PDF report. It explicitly says video does not support those editing functions or PDF report generation. Thermal Master's manual documents secondary point/line/plane analysis and Windows thermal analysis. Confirm the exact file workflow before buying for records; a viewable video is not evidence of editable temperature data throughout it.

For repeatable comparisons, record the board identity, operating state, time since power-on, camera position and temperature settings. Keep the original capture alongside a visible photo identifying the component and your electrical findings.

Keep a useful board-inspection record
  1. Identify the target

Record the board and component labels alongside a visible reference photo.

  2. Keep conditions comparable

Note operating state, elapsed time, camera position and temperature settings.

  3. Preserve the capture

Retain the original file and check the intended analysis or reporting workflow.

  4. Confirm the cause

Use the thermal finding to direct electrical checks before deciding what to replace.

Thermal Master's FAQ advises matching emissivity to the material and avoiding highly reflective surfaces for accurate readings. Treat a suspicious pattern as a diagnostic clue; confirm the electrical problem separately. Our multimeter guide covers the companion instrument choice.

Verdict

Buy Mini2Plus V2 with its optional stand for the best documented bench arrangement here. Choose P3 when its adjustable macro optics fit the target better, after confirming the close-view footprint and mount. Keep Mini2 V2 for wider surveys and P2 Pro conditional on region and exact kit. Buy the focused view and supported host together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best thermal camera for electronics?

Our default bench choice is HIKMICRO Mini2Plus V2 with its optional HM-AHBR02 stand and a supported USB-C host. Its manual focus and documented minimum distance make the setup easier to specify before buying. Thermal Master P3 is our alternative for its adjustable macro arrangement, although its advertised close-view distance does not establish the size of an accurately measurable target. Choose the optical setup and host together.

Can I use the HIKMICRO Mini2 V2 for PCB inspection?

For a wider board overview or computer-cooling survey, it is an option. Its specification gives a 0.2 m minimum focus distance and a 50° × 37.2° field of view. We would choose the manually focused Mini2Plus V2 for smaller board regions instead. Do not confuse the two names or assume that placing the focus-free Mini2 V2 closer will produce a sharp component image.

Does a USB-C thermal camera work with an iPhone?

Check the exact camera and current app requirements. HIKMICRO documents USB-C iOS support and an included Lightning adapter for Mini2Plus V2, but its manual says the Lightning adapter and Type-C extension cord cannot be used together. That matters for a camera mounted away from the phone. The P3 manual lists Android and iOS support; confirm the intended phone and adapter package before ordering.

Should I buy Thermal Master P2 Pro or P3 for electronics?

For a new purchase, we favor P3's adjustable macro arrangement. The P-series manual describes P2 Pro's magnetic macro lens, while Thermal Master's current navigation labels P2 Pro Canada Only. If it is available to you, confirm the Android or iOS version and included lens first. The original P2 has a fixed lens in the manual; neither its name nor another brand's P2 Pro establishes the same package.
