Key facts

Detection range
Low-voltage mode 12 to 1000 V AC; standard mode 70 to 1000 V AC
Frequency
50 to 500 Hz
Indication
Flashing or steady LED in the tip plus beeps when voltage is sensed; a green light when none is sensed
Flashlight
Bright LED that works without the voltage function
Detection conditions (manual)
Thresholds apply with the tip within 0.25 in (6 mm) of an unobstructed AC source, the tester held in a bare hand, the user grounded and normal humidity
Won't detect (manual)
DC voltage, voltage inside shielded wire, or voltage when the user is insulated from ground
Tamper-resistant outlets
Klein suggests the low-voltage mode for them, but the manual warns the tester may not work with some standard or tamper-resistant outlets

Which version should you buy?

This page covers: NCVT3P pen only.

  • NCVT3P pen only

    This page

    Model: NCVT3P

    What differs
Pen with a flashlight and two AC detection modes: 12 to 1000 V and 70 to 1000 V.
    Best for
Non-contact checks of both low-voltage and mains AC wiring.
  • NCVT3PKIT pen and contact tester

    Model: NCVT3PKIT

    What differs
Adds an ET45 contact AC/DC voltage tester to the NCVT3P pen.
    Best for
Checking voltage with test leads as well as with a non-contact pen.
  • RT250KIT pen and LCD outlet tester

    Model: RT250KIT

    What differs
Pairs the NCVT3P with an RT250 outlet tester that displays voltage, wiring faults and GFCI trip time.
    Best for
Outlet and GFCI checks alongside non-contact AC detection.
  • NCVT-3 older bar-graph pen

    Model: NCVT-3

    What differs
Discontinued predecessor with a five-LED bar graph indicating relative signal strength.
    Best for
Buyers specifically seeking the older bar-graph design.

Watch out

  • The sensitive mode covers 12 to 1000 V AC; it is not limited to 12 to 70 V.
  • NCVT3PKIT adds an ET45 contact tester; RT250KIT adds an RT250 outlet tester.
  • NCVT-3 is the discontinued bar-graph model; check for NCVT3P on the pen.
  • The NCVT3P pen detects AC only; the separate ET45 in NCVT3PKIT also checks DC.

Why people pick it

  • Two modes: the 12 V AC low range helps with low-voltage wiring, and Klein points tamper-resistant outlet checks to this low-voltage mode
  • Flashlight built in, usable on its own
  • CAT IV 1000V rating and an IP67 body
  • Green tip light shows the tester is on; it lights when no voltage is detected

Know before you buy

  • AC only: it won't detect DC voltage
  • Silence doesn't prove a wire is dead: Klein says voltage may still be present, and to test on a known live circuit before and after each use
  • Shielded cable, gloves or an ungrounded user can block detection
  • Detects voltage only; it can't measure it
