If the electrician on your list already owns a multimeter, give them a tool that measures what a multimeter doesn't. The easy win is the Klein Tools RT250 GFCI receptacle tester, which shows an outlet's voltage, names the wiring fault and times how long a GFCI takes to trip. For a bigger present, Klein's CL710 clamp meter reads AC and DC current to 600 A without breaking the circuit, and engineers who live with USB-C chargers get the most from a ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C, which lists what a charger offers and reads a cable's e-marker. Specs checked on each maker's site and manual, November 1, 2026.

Before you buy: three checks
Check the exact model
Klein's MM400 page says it's no longer in production and points to the MM420. Fluke's US listing has no Fluke 101; its pocket meters there are the 106 and 107. And a 2021 CPSC recall covered Klein's NCVT1 pens (no "P"), so read the model number on the box.
Bare tool or kit?
Klein sells the RT250 on its own and as the RT250KIT with a dual-range non-contact pen, and it pairs pens with receptacle testers in other kits too. A kit only helps if they don't already own the pen.
Match the safety rating, leads included
Fluke's clamp manual says not to exceed the measurement category of the lowest-rated component of the meter, probes and accessories. Klein ships the MM420's leads with CAT III/CAT IV caps and says leaving them off in those locations increases arc-flash risk.
Stocking stuffers
Klein Tools RT250 GFCI receptacle tester
A plug-in tester is the quickest outlet check there is, and the RT250 turns the usual pattern of lights into numbers. Klein's RT250 page describes a backlit LCD that shows the voltage, identifies the wiring fault and shows the time a GFCI takes to trip. It conforms to UL 1436 and is rated CAT II 135V, and Klein specifies it for three-wire North American 120 V outlets only. If they'd rather have the classic three-light version, Klein's RT210 reads the common wiring faults from a chart printed on the tester.

Klein Tools NCVT3P dual-range non-contact pen
A non-contact pen is the first check before anyone touches a wire, and this one covers more jobs than most. Klein's instruction sheet specifies detection above 12 V AC in its low-voltage mode and above 70 V AC in its standard mode, and Klein lists doorbells, thermostats, low-voltage lighting and irrigation systems alongside cords, switches and outlets. It adds a flashlight that works without the voltage function, a CAT IV 1000V rating and an IP67 body. Any pen is only a first check, though: Klein says to verify it on a known working circuit before and after each use.

Plugable USBC-VAMETER3 USB-C power meter
For anyone who charges a laptop or phone over USB-C, this flash-drive-size meter shows what's flowing on the cable. Plugable's VAMETER3 page gives a 4.5 to 50 V, 50 mA to 6.5 A operating range and support for USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range (101 to 240 W). Its OLED display shows flow direction, amps, volts and approximate watts, and it passes 10 Gbps data and Alt Mode video while it measures. Plugable says it isn't compatible with Intel Thunderbolt 3 devices. For someone who also checks USB-A ports, Klein's ET920 reads both and counts the milliamp-hours and watt-hours delivered.

P3 Kill A Watt P4400
The classic answer to "what does this appliance really use?" You simply plug the appliance into it, and P3's P4400 page lists volts, amps, watts, Hz and VA on its display, plus consumption counted in kilowatt-hours, "same as your local utility." P3 states 0.2% accuracy and rates it for 15 A and 1875 VA. One quirk to mention on the gift tag: the manual says the totals reset when you unplug it.

Under the tree
Klein Tools CL710 AC/DC clamp meter
Clamp meters let electricians avoid "cutting into a wire and inserting test leads for an in-line current measurement," as Fluke puts it: the jaw measures current without disconnecting or de-energizing the circuit. The CL710 reads AC and DC current to 600 A, so it can measure the DC side of cars, solar arrays and battery banks as well as house wiring. Klein adds a low-impedance mode for ghost voltages and non-contact detection in the jaw, and rates it CAT IV 600V, CAT III 1000V.

How we choose
We haven't tested these tools. Every gift comes from research:
- Maker documents. Ranges, ratings and features come from Klein's, Fluke's, P3's, Plugable's and ChargerLAB's product pages and manuals, read November 1, 2026.
- Gift fit. We favor tools that add a measurement a multimeter can't make, so they're useful even to someone who owns a good meter.
- The current model. We checked each maker's current line-up and the CPSC recall database for every model.
- No prices. Prices and deals change daily; the retailer's page shows the current one.
Our full method is on How we choose.
Verdict
For an electrician who has the basics, the Klein RT250 is the stocking stuffer to get: voltage, the wiring fault and the GFCI trip time on one screen. The Klein CL710 is the bigger gift, reading AC and DC current to 600 A through the jaw, and HVAC technicians will want the CL390 for its DC microamp range. Network installers get the most from the Scout Pro Max, industrial electricians from the Fluke 87V MAX, and engineers from the ChargerLAB KM003C. Whatever you choose, check the model number, whether it's a kit, and the rating on the leads.
Frequently asked questions
What do you get an electrician who has everything?
A tool that measures something their multimeter can't. If they already carry a meter and a non-contact pen, look at a GFCI tester that shows trip time, like the Klein RT250, an AC/DC clamp meter that reads current without breaking the circuit, like the Klein CL710, or, for anyone who runs network cable, a tester that measures cable length and PoE, like the Klein Scout Pro Max.
What multimeter should I buy an apprentice electrician?
The Fluke 117 is built for electrical work: True RMS, CAT III 600V, VoltAlert non-contact detection and a low-impedance mode that Fluke says prevents false readings from ghost voltage. Check that the test leads in the box carry at least the meter's rating, because the lowest-rated part of the set limits where it can be used.
Should I buy a kit or a single tool as a gift?
Only buy a kit if they don't already own what's in it. Klein sells the RT250 outlet tester on its own and in the RT250KIT with a dual-range non-contact pen, so find out first whether they already own a pen. Check the model number on the box too: the bare tool and the kit are listed separately.
