For a phone-based car battery tester, our first choice is the Autel MaxiBAS BT506: its Battery Test app documents iOS/Android battery, starter and charging checks plus PDF reports. Choose TOPDON BTMobile ProS for an existing compatible TOPDON scanner, or for a phone only after confirming a serial number beginning “13”—TOPDON now specifies BatteryLab smartphone support for those units. The host and hardware revision matter more than the shared 100–2000 CCA range. Sources: Autel manual, TOPDON US specifications.

Best starting point for phone users: Autel MaxiBAS BT506
The BT506 earns our default recommendation because Autel's manual documents the complete phone workflow and PDF export. It covers in-vehicle and out-of-vehicle battery tests; its in-vehicle sequence includes starter and generator tests. A compatible diagnostic tablet is optional for this purchase.
Setup involves more than pairing Bluetooth. Install Battery Test, register or sign into an Autel account, pair the BT506 by its QR code or Bluetooth, then install the vehicle diagnostic data package through Update. Autel says the Battery Test vehicle software is free and permanently valid. Its manual requires a 64-bit device, but gives no minimum iOS or Android version: check installation on your intended phone before ordering.
For reports, the manual documents saving a PDF and generating files for viewing, sharing and printing. That makes BT506 our clearer choice when sending a battery check to someone else is central to the purchase. It does not establish an independent accuracy advantage over TOPDON.
Buy the BT506 clamp module plus your compatible phone for those battery and electrical-system checks. Autel's US page specifies the connected clamp cable. The phone manual separately requires a MaxiVCI V200P for Battery change, Battery reset and Diagnostics; seeing those buttons does not make them included BT506 functions. Do not add diagnostic hardware merely to get the documented battery tests or PDF reports.
See the BT506 package at Autel.
Best for an existing TOPDON setup: BTMobile ProS
The decisive detail is on TOPDON's US product page: its new smartphone section names BatteryLab and restricts compatibility to ProS serial numbers starting with “13”. Elsewhere, that same page still says ProS only works with TOPDON Phoenix professional scanners, UltraDiag and ArtiDiag900Lite. Read the phone section as a specific hardware qualification, rather than treating either statement as universal.
For a scanner owner, ProS is our pick when the existing supported host is where you want the results. For a phone-only buyer, obtain confirmation of the actual serial prefix before paying. A ProS name, a Bluetooth badge or a picture of a phone does not settle that revision question. TOPDON's smartphone article confirms battery, cranking, charging and system tests plus a battery library without a scan tool, but omits the serial qualification found on the product page.
The US package lists clamps, a carrying case and a user manual. Its automatic result recording is useful for repeat checks, and TOPDON support says tablet report sharing requires logging into the BT Mobile Pros account. We could not establish the current BatteryLab export format or subscription terms from the cited ProS documents; do not assume its sharing workflow produces the same PDF as Autel's.
TOPDON's OS requirements conflict too. Its linked ProS manual says Android 4.4 or newer, while its download entry and support article say Android 5.0 or later. These documents do not establish a current BatteryLab OS matrix or iOS minimum. Verify installation on the actual phone and the eligible serial prefix before ordering.

Autel's voltage claims conflict. Its US page specifies 6/12 V batteries and 12/24 V cranking/charging, while the global BT506 page specifies 12 V batteries and 12 V systems. For a 6 V battery or 24 V vehicle, get confirmation for the exact hardware and host software before ordering; this recommendation covers the shared 12 V job.
Its power specifications also disagree. Both product-page tables say internal battery N/A; the linked manual specifies a 3.7 V / 800 mAh rechargeable internal battery. Confirm the delivered unit's power arrangement and charging accessories. We leave that specification unresolved rather than promise either arrangement.
- Yes: BT506 phone route: Battery Test on a compatible iOS/Android device
- Partly: BT506 tablet route: the exact Autel tablet must support Battery Test
- Partly: ProS phone route: BatteryLab and the confirmed “13” serial prefix
- Partly: ProS scanner route: an explicitly supported TOPDON host
What a shareable battery report establishes
A report preserves a result; it does not guarantee remaining service life. TOPDON's support guidance describes tester readings as a snapshot affected by environment, use history and aging. The same ProS section distinguishes state of charge (SOC) from state of health (SOH) and reports voltage, CCA and internal resistance. Avoid reducing all that information to a single health percentage.
Enter the battery type, printed rating standard and rated value accurately; both makers' instructions require these selections. Record those inputs with the result so a later comparison uses the same basis. Autel's result table distinguishes Good & Recharge from Charge & Retest: a request to charge and repeat the check is not a replacement verdict. Follow the maker's prompted test sequence and the vehicle's service instructions; our car-battery testing guide explains the wider decision.
Winter and Black Friday purchase checklist
Before a winter purchase or gift, establish the recipient's phone/app fit, battery chemistry and need for reports. During a sale, compare the exact suffix, serial qualification, clamps, case and host rather than treating any similarly named box as the same usable kit. These are package checks, not a claim of a current discount or Amazon availability.
For winter use, Autel specifies a BT506 working range of −10 to 50°C. That is its stated operating range, not proof of starting reliability in colder conditions. TOPDON's manual specifies −10 to 45°C, while its sell sheet says −20 to 65°C; get confirmation before choosing ProS for colder use. Inspect the battery for cracks, swelling or leaks and follow the vehicle and tester manuals; Autel also calls for ventilation during engine-running tests and keeping leads away from moving belts.
Copy the battery label
Use its chemistry, rating standard and rated value when configuring the test.
Follow the result
If instructed to charge and retest, complete that step before deciding on replacement.
Keep the context
Save the result alongside the battery identity and inputs for the next check.
How we choose
We compared official US and global product pages, Autel's linked manual and TOPDON's support guidance, checked November 3, 2026. Recommendations reflect documented host support, test modes, report handling and package contents; we have not physically tested either tester. Unresolved revision, software and documentation differences remain explicit. See our selection method.
Verdict
Choose BT506 for the clearest documented iOS/Android setup and PDF workflow. Choose BTMobile ProS for your supported TOPDON scanner, or a phone order with the “13” serial prefix confirmed and BatteryLab compatibility checked. If app setup is the wrong fit, return to our best battery testers guide for a standalone choice.
Frequently asked questions
Does TOPDON BTMobile ProS work with a phone?
Yes, conditionally: TOPDON's US product page specifies BatteryLab smartphone support for BTMobile ProS units whose serial numbers start with 13. That same page retains scanner-only wording elsewhere, so check the actual unit before ordering. An unspecified ProS box is not enough evidence of phone compatibility. Existing compatible TOPDON scanner owners have a separate supported route.
Do I need an Autel tablet to use the BT506?
No. Autel's manual documents the Battery Test app for iOS and Android, on 64-bit devices, including battery, starter and generator tests. You register or sign in, pair the tester and download the vehicle software. Compatible Autel tablets are another option. Battery reset and diagnostics shown in the phone app require the separate V200P upgrade.
Can either tester check a lithium car battery?
Neither pick's cited battery-type list establishes lithium starter-battery compatibility. Both list flooded, AGM, AGM spiral, EFB and GEL batteries. Match the tester to the battery's chemistry rather than its nominal voltage alone. Autel's manual also describes a lithium battery inside the tester; that is not a claim that the tester supports lithium vehicle batteries.
Does a good battery report guarantee the car will start all winter?
No. TOPDON describes a tester result as a snapshot affected by environment, use and aging, rather than a complete prediction of battery lifespan. Autel also distinguishes Good & Recharge from Charge & Retest. Save the report with the battery's identification and entered rating, and investigate persistent starting trouble using the vehicle's service procedure.
