Sources: the four official product pages above, the T5 instruction card, T6 model-specific quick reference and PRO datasheet. Voltage range and category are separate checks; the suffix does not describe every function.
Best for probe-based basics: Fluke T5-600
Choose the T5-600 when you want conventional voltage probing and open-fork AC-current measurement. Fluke specifies automatic AC/DC voltage selection to 600 V, current to 100 A AC, resistance to 1000 Ω and continuity. Its 12.9 mm opening is smaller than the T6's; check access and conductor size before choosing on functions alone.
The limitation is the voltage method: T5 has no FieldSense voltage measurement. Its open fork measures current; voltage still needs the leads. Fluke also specifies an averaging AC response, rather than the T6's True RMS response. We would choose it for the simpler function set when those limits fit, rather than buy it expecting T6 capabilities.
Check the T5-600 model and standard package at Fluke.
Higher-rated probe-based choice: Fluke T5-1000
The T5-1000 keeps the same basic measurement approach, 100 A AC fork-current ceiling, 12.9 mm opening and 1000 Ω resistance range. Its reasons to exist are the 1000 V AC/DC ceiling and CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V markings. It does not add FieldSense or True RMS.
Choose it when the required category and voltage call for those markings. If you are choosing between T5 versions for extra current capacity, the larger suffix does not help. Fluke's own answer on the T5-1000 page also says it has no inrush-current capture function; HOLD should not be mistaken for a compressor-start capture feature.

FieldSense without the extra functions: Fluke T6-600
Choose T6-600 when you need True RMS, the 17.8 mm fork and 200 A AC ceiling, but the PRO's extra functions do not matter. Its FieldSense mode measures AC voltage through insulation; its attached leads handle conventional AC/DC voltage, resistance and continuity.
The important limits are CAT III 600 V, resistance to 2000 Ω, and a display that switches between FieldSense voltage and current instead of showing both together. Its model-specific function table lists no frequency measurement. Fluke's general T6 tutorial describes frequency at family level; do not transfer that feature to the T6-600 when comparing models.

Most capable current T6: Fluke T6-1000 PRO
The PRO is our T6 choice when you will use simultaneous AC voltage/current, 45–66 Hz frequency, or resistance to 100 kΩ. It retains the 200 A AC, 17.8 mm fork and adds Visual Continuity: a green screen accompanies the continuity beeper. That is useful when hearing the beeper is difficult.
Fluke's original T6-1000 page explicitly marks that model discontinued and points to the PRO. An older T6-1000 already offered simultaneous readings, frequency and the higher resistance range; the PRO adds visual continuity and includes a clip and holster in its standard package. The separate T6-KIT can add an H-T6 holster and AC285 clips to other T6 models. Do not identify it merely as “T6 1000.”

Open-fork current and FieldSense voltage are different
Both families measure AC current without opening the circuit. Only T6 adds FieldSense AC voltage through the insulation. Fluke describes this as an actual voltage measurement, rather than a voltage-presence warning. Conventional AC/DC voltage measurements still use the probes; Fluke also requires the leads for phase-to-phase voltage measurements.
Access to an individual conductor is essential. The T6 quick reference specifies a single wire, and Fluke's T5 support answer explicitly says it will not measure current around an extension cord containing multiple conductors. A wider fork does not remove that access requirement. These are reasons to check the physical job before ordering, not to open equipment to make the tester fit.
DC voltage is not DC current. The published fork-current ranges are AC only. If that is the wrong measurement, return to our clamp-meter selection guide or multimeter guide and check the specific current function you need.
- Yes: Both families: AC current through an open fork
- Yes: T6: FieldSense AC voltage through insulation, with the required earth reference
- No: DC current: no range listed for these models
- Partly: Phase-to-phase voltage: use the test leads, as Fluke specifies
The distinctions above follow Fluke's T5 measurement-method comparison and FieldSense tutorial.
Ground reference and accuracy: read the footnotes
For T6-600 and the original T6-1000, Fluke describes a capacitive earth-reference path through the rear touch contact and user. Insulated gloves, an insulated ladder or other isolation require an external ground connection. Their voltage-accuracy footnotes add 3% without an external ground connection. This requirement is a buying constraint if your working conditions routinely involve isolation; it is no reason to remove protective equipment.
For T6-1000 PRO, plan for the black ground lead. There is a conflict in Fluke's documentation: the PRO web table labels FieldSense voltage “Requires test leads: No,” while its datasheet says “Black lead” and its overview describes the ground clip. We follow the explicit grounding requirement, rather than promise completely lead-free PRO voltage measurement.
For the T6 models, the published AC-voltage specifications are ±(3% + 3 counts) in FieldSense and ±(1.5% + 2 counts) with probes, at 45–66 Hz, with 1 V resolution. FieldSense voltage is specified only from 16 V to the model's full range. True RMS does not extend those stated frequency or voltage limits. Our buying implication: choose FieldSense for its measurement method, not because it promises tighter voltage accuracy.
These details come from the T6-600 accuracy footnotes and PRO datasheet.
See Fluke's absence-of-voltage explanation, T5 safety sheet and T6 safety sheet.
Buying guide: ratings and the complete package
Read the category and voltage together. The higher-rated versions provide CAT IV 600 V, not CAT IV at their full 1000 V voltage ceiling. Fluke's safety information also limits the assembly to its lowest-rated instrument, probe or accessory. Match the required marking before the feature list; higher-rated accessories do not upgrade the tester.

The model pages linked above provide these lists. CAL versions of the T5 add a traceable calibration certificate with data; that suffix does not add FieldSense. Fluke's separate T6-KIT contains an H-T6 holster, AC285 clips and TPAK hanger: it is an accessory kit, not a tester. The PRO already includes a holster and a black clip, so compare contents before adding it automatically.
For T5 lead replacement, Fluke lists the T5-RLS lead set. Treat replacement leads and detachable probe tips as separate items to verify; the safety sheet requires specified replacement parts.

How we choose
We compared official US product pages, model-specific function tables, instruction cards, safety sheets and documented package contents. These are recommendations from manufacturer specifications; we have no physical test results. We preserve documentation conflicts rather than silently choosing a favorable specification. Our selection method explains the approach.
Verdict
Buy T5-600 for probe-based basics, or T5-1000 for the higher marked ratings with the same basic functions. Buy T6-600 when FieldSense and its larger AC-current fork justify the change. Choose T6-1000 PRO when simultaneous readings, frequency, the resistance range and its documented accessory package fit your work. Decide on the method, ratings and complete kit before the suffix.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Fluke T5 or T6 measure DC current?
No DC-current range is listed for these models. T5 fork current is AC to 100 A; T6 fork current is AC to 200 A. Their AC/DC voltage capability uses the test leads and does not imply DC-current measurement. If battery or vehicle current is the reason for buying, choose an instrument whose manufacturer explicitly specifies DC current and the resolution your job needs.
Does Fluke T6 FieldSense work with gloves?
Fluke requires an external ground connection on the T6-600 and original T6-1000 when insulated gloves, an insulated ladder or other isolation prevents the user's earth reference. The T6-1000 PRO's datasheet specifies the black lead for FieldSense voltage and its standard package includes a black AC285 clip. Keep the required protective equipment; choose the measurement method around it.
Should I buy a 600 or 1000 version?
Match both the measurement category and voltage to the job. T5-600 and T6-600 are CAT III 600 V; T5-1000 and T6-1000 PRO are CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V. Within T5, the higher suffix leaves the current and resistance ranges unchanged. Within T6, the PRO also adds frequency, simultaneous volts/amps and a higher resistance range compared with T6-600.
Can a missing FieldSense reading prove a circuit is dead?
Do not treat a missing value as permission to work. Fluke specifies FieldSense voltage only from 16 V and requires an adequate earth reference. As a buying and safety rule, that makes a blank display unsuitable as your proof of de-energization. Follow the instrument manual and the required absence-of-voltage verification procedure; leave panel work to a licensed electrician.
