Sources: the linked product pages, TL175 instructions, 69410 instructions and Fluke's accessory guide. The current TL175 US specifications do not state cable length. We could not verify an ampere rating for 69410 in its product page or linked instructions; do not borrow a meter's input limit as the lead rating.

Best adjustable everyday set: Fluke TL175

Choose the TL175 when you want to change tip exposure without keeping track of loose protective caps. The guard changes exposure from 19 mm to 4 mm, and the category appropriate to the selected exposure remains visible on the probe.

Its WearGuard insulation has contrasting inner material that signals damage. Fluke instructs users to replace leads when that inner color shows or resistance is high.

Order the right version: TL175 is the complete red/black pair. TL175E adds removable 4 mm lantern tips that thread onto the probe tips. Those lantern tips are at the work end, distinct from the meter-end banana plugs. TP175 is the modular probe option for compatible leads, including Fluke's TL22x series; it is not the complete TL175 replacement pair.

For bare probes, Fluke's instruction sheet requires the guard fully extended for CAT III/CAT IV environments. Retracting it fully exposes 19 mm and changes the rating to CAT II 1000 V.

See the TL175 and TL175E versions at Fluke.

Best fixed-probe silicone set: Fluke TL71

The TL71 is our choice if you prefer fixed comfort-grip probes and separate caps. Fluke specifies flexible silicone insulation, right-angle leads, 4 ft length and 2 mm diameter probe tips. Its meter connectors accept the standard 4 mm shrouded interface.

The current US page explicitly includes the red/black pair and protective caps. With those caps fitted, Fluke specifies CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V; the uncapped rating is CAT II 1000 V. The current maximum is 10 A. Keep the caps with the set rather than treating them as disposable packaging.

TL71 vs TL175: both current US pages specify silicone and WearGuard damage indication. Choose between TL71's separate caps and TL175's integrated twist guard. Fluke recommends TL71 for microvolt measurements without quantifying any accuracy improvement. Alligator clips are not in its stated box contents.

Best documented Klein replacement: Klein Tools 69410

For an MM420, CL390 or CL710, 69410 is our starting recommendation because Klein names those models in its compatibility list.

It supplies 41-inch PVC leads and removable alligator clips; the instructions identify the clips as screw-on. Klein specifies CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V and requires the shields firmly fitted in those measurement locations. Removing the shields is documented for CAT II locations; those instructions do not specify an uncapped voltage ceiling. Confirm the current ceiling with Klein if your intended task involves current through the leads.

Version trap: 69410 has right-angle inputs. Klein's separate 69418 straight-input set is marked no longer in production. Do not order an old straight-input listing on the assumption that the plug geometry is identical.

See 69410's current meter list and contents at Klein.

Best for small electronic test points: Fluke TL910

Choose TL910 when access to small electronic test points is the reason for replacing your leads. Fluke specifies 1 mm tips, 1 m leads, and tip lengths up to 100 mm. It includes three sets of spring-loaded gold tips and two sets of stainless-steel tips.

The important limit is CAT II 1000 V, 3 A: choose another set for CAT III/CAT IV tasks. Fluke's accessory guide describes a complete red/black lead pair; TP912 denotes replacement tips for TL910, not the complete lead set.

See the TL910 set at Fluke.

How we choose

We compared official US product pages, instructions and manufacturer accessory documents, checked November 2, 2026. These are research-based recommendations; we have not physically tested the leads. We prioritized documented fit, complete-set contents and configuration-specific ratings. Missing specifications and conflicting documents are identified below. Read our selection method.

Sources: TL175, TL71, 69410, TL910, and 87V MAX contents. Unlisted combinations need confirmation; absence from this table is not proof of incompatibility.

Separate three dimensions: the 4 mm shrouded banana interface on TL175/TL71 describes the meter end; TL71's 2 mm diameter describes its contact tip; TL175's 19–4 mm range describes exposed metal length. Before ordering an unlisted pairing, ask the maker to confirm socket recess, shroud clearance and cable exit. The cited specifications lack plug-body clearance drawings to certify extra combinations.

Choose a replacement that fits
  1. Find your meter

Start with the exact model in the manufacturer's compatibility list.

  2. Confirm the connector

Check the shrouded interface, socket recess and clearance for the plug body and cable exit.

  3. Match the complete setup

Check meter, leads, caps, clips and adapters against the task's ratings.

  4. Check the package

Order a complete lead pair unless you already own the compatible modular leads or probes.

Ratings: read the configuration, not just the largest number

The lowest category rating of the meter and accessory combination applies; higher-rated leads do not upgrade a meter. Fluke's TL175 instructions explicitly rate the properly seated AC175/TL175 combination at CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V. Use that documented assembly rating when adding the clip; do not assume every adapter preserves a probe's rating.

Check current limits separately, including the meter's input restrictions. For meter selection, use our best multimeter guide; for operating basics, read how to use a multimeter.

Silicone test leads vs PVC

Prefer silicone for cold-weather flexibility. Fluke's accessory application note says silicone is typically more flexible than PVC and describes PVC as suitable for mild environments such as a lab or workbench. It also explains that the number and fineness of conductor strands affect flexibility. Material alone cannot tell you how every lead handles.

TL175 and TL71 use silicone; 69410 uses PVC. Fluke's inspection advice says both materials can become brittle or crack with age. Inspect insulation, handles and connectors regardless of jacket material.

Clips, back probes and modular parts: buy only what fits

AC175 clips: Fluke's current page lists TL175, TP175, TL71 and TL75 compatibility and CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V, 10 A. They are a separate purchase for the standard TL175/TL71 sets. There is a sizing conflict: the current page specifies a 7 mm jaw opening, while the 2023–2024 accessory guide says 8 mm. The current page also mixes threaded and slide-on descriptions. Confirm the attachment and jaw clearance with Fluke before ordering.

Automotive back probes: Fluke's TP88 page specifies slide-on fit for 2 mm probes and 60 V DC. TL71 has that tip diameter, but confirm the exact pairing with Fluke before buying. The adapter's limit still applies.

Modular leads: Fluke's accessory guide identifies TL224 as leads with a right-angle connector at one end and a straight connector at the other. TP175 supplies compatible modular probes. Treat these as components to match, rather than confusing either package with TL175's complete probe-and-lead pair.

  • Yes: Klein 69410 includes alligator clips.
  • Yes: Standard Fluke 87V MAX already includes TL175 and AC175.
  • Partly: TL175E adds lantern tips; TP175 is the modular probe option.
  • No: TP912 replacement tips are not a complete TL910 lead pair.

Verdict

Start with TL175 for adjustable protection on a compatible meter, TL71 for fixed silicone probes with caps, 69410 for a listed Klein replacement with clips, or TL910 for small electronic test points within its lower limits. Buy the complete set your meter and task require, then add only the compatible accessories you need.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best multimeter test leads?

Our first choice for a compatible meter is Fluke TL175 because its adjustable guard changes exposed-tip length without swapping protective caps. Choose TL71 for fixed comfort-grip silicone probes, Klein 69410 for a maker-listed Klein fit with clips included, or TL910 for small electronic test points. The best replacement is the set with documented fit and appropriate ratings for your task.

Do all 4 mm test leads fit every multimeter?

No. Fluke specifies instruments that accept standard 4 mm shrouded banana connectors for TL175 and TL71. That describes the complete connector interface, not just a metal pin diameter. Check the meter's accessory documentation, socket recess and clearance around the plug body. For the Klein meters listed in our table, 69410 has explicit model-level compatibility evidence.

Silicone test leads vs PVC: which should I buy?

Choose silicone when flexibility in cold conditions matters; Fluke says it is typically more flexible than PVC. PVC remains an option for mild bench environments, and Klein specifies it for 69410. Conductor strand construction also affects flexibility. Neither jacket material replaces checks for connector fit, the required protective configuration, voltage, measurement category and current limits.

Can higher-rated test leads upgrade my multimeter?

No. Fluke's TL175 instructions say the lowest category rating of the instrument and accessory combination applies. The lead's printed voltage or current ceiling does not authorize exceeding the meter's own limits. Check the entire configuration, including clips and adapters: TL910 is specified at 3 A, while TL175 and TL71 are specified at 10 A maximum.
