Klein's ET310 page, ET450 page, Fluke's 2062 page and IDEAL's 61-535 page document these packages. The ET310 and ET450 models are compared model-for-model in our ET310 vs ET450 guide; for a wider field including GFCI-tester combos, start at the circuit breaker finder roundup.

Compare the included transmitter, receiver and adapters

The single biggest kit difference is whether the transmitter needs the circuit's own power. Klein states that the ET310 transmitter is powered by the connected outlet or fixture and does not require a battery, operating on 90-120V AC circuits. That is one less battery to buy, but it also means no tracing with the power off. The ET450 transmitter runs on 6 × 1.5V AA alkaline batteries, and Fluke's 2000T transmitter runs on 8 × AA alkaline batteries, so both trace de-energized circuits.

Connection adapters are where "kit" earns its name. The table below is exactly what each maker documents as included:

Best basic complete package: Klein ET310

The ET310 is the honest baseline: it is a finder, not a tracer, and Klein's page is specific about what ships. The transmitter plugs into a North American grounded outlet, incorporates wiring-condition indicators and a GFCI test button, and docks in the receiver for storage. The receiver uses one included 9V battery and powers off automatically after about three minutes of non-use.

  • Included: transmitter, receiver, user manual and 9V battery for the receiver
  • Operating range: 90-120V AC circuits; CAT II 120V safety rating
  • Separate accessories: 69411 accessory kit (light-socket adapter, alligator clip adapter, 3-prong to 2-prong grounding adapter), ET310CASE replacement case, ET310TRANS replacement transmitter
  • Receiver battery compartment: easily accessible, with a low battery indicator

The trap is the bundle: ET310KIT is the ET310 plus the 69411 adapters and a hard carrying case, while the standard package has neither. Buyers who need to connect to a lighting fixture or bare wires and order the plain ET310 are buying an incomplete kit for their job. The maker's page also notes that accessories for bare wires require the circuit not to be energized while connecting.

Best full tracing kit: Klein ET450

The ET450 is the kit whose contents justify the word "kit": Klein's page lists the transmitter, receiver, blade and ground prongs, alligator clips, 3-foot and 20-foot lead adapters, AC plug leads, instructions, all required batteries and a hard carrying case. Those are the documented package contents, but tracing success still depends on circuit conditions and return paths: match any special connection requirement to the manual.

  • Tracing: energized or non-energized breakers, fuses and wires, including through drywall, cement block and underground, with eight receiver sensitivity levels; subject to the manual's conduit, shielding and return-path limitations
  • Transmitter voltage indicators: 12V, 48V, 120V, 240V and 480V
  • Receiver: LCD with backlight, flashlight, NCV function, audible and visual signal indicators; 4 × 1.5V AA alkaline batteries
  • Battery life: up to 24 hr; IP42; CAT III 600V standard

For a model-by-model comparison against the ET310, including the GFCI and de-energized differences, read ET310 vs ET450. For a pro-grade alternative to this kit, see ET450 vs Fluke 2062.

Best professional kit: Fluke 2062 Advanced Pro

Fluke's 2062 page calls its complete kit "everything required to start tracing wires and circuits": the 2062R receiver with Smart Sensor, the 2000T transmitter, the i400 AC Current Clamp, the 2000ACC Test Lead Accessory Kit, a smart strap magnetic hanger, batteries, a premium hard carrying case and a quick reference guide. The clamp is the accessory that separates this from a DIY kit: it induces a tracing signal through insulation when there is no access to bare conductors, and Fluke says direct connection with the included alligator clips and test leads always gives the most accurate results.

  • Safety rating: the Fluke 2062 wire tracer is rated up to CAT IV 600 V, the protection Fluke describes as the highest available on any wire tracer
  • The 2000ACC lead kit contents: two 1 m test leads (red, black), one 7 m test lead (green), two black test probes, two alligator clips (red, black), two outlet blade adapters and two outlet round adapters (red, black)
  • Transmitter modes: high, low and loop, with a 6 kHz or 33 kHz output frequency selected automatically by sensing whether the system is energized or de-energized
  • Receiver: 3.5-inch color TFT LCD (480 x 320 pixels) with Smart Sensor wire visualization, breaker mode and NCV mode; 8 receiver sensitivity levels
  • Battery life: receiver approx. 20 h; transmitter approx. 25 h in high/low mode, approx. 18 h in loop mode

Two kit-contents cautions. First, the accessory ratings are not uniform: within the 2000ACC kit, the test leads and alligator clips are CAT IV 600 V, the test probes CAT II 1000 V and the outlet adapters CAT II 300 V. Second, the clamp fits conductors up to 32 mm; it does not upgrade any lower-rated part of the setup.

The budget line: IDEAL 61-535

IDEAL's 61-535 page documents a two-part package: transmitter and receiver. The transmitter works on an energized 120V AC circuit and tests outlet wiring with green and red LEDs plus GFCIs; the battery-powered receiver pinpoints the breaker with a flashing green LED and beeps, mutes its audible signal, includes a work light and an 80 to 300V AC non-contact voltage sensor, and powers off after five minutes of non-use. It is rated CAT II 150 V, with cULus certification (UL 1436, CSA C22.2 No. 160) and a limited 2-year warranty.

  • Included: transmitter and receiver; IDEAL's page lists battery size as 2 x 9V, while its manual specifies a 9V receiver battery, so battery count and inclusion need confirmation
  • Optional accessory: Circuit Breaker Adapter Kit TL-532A, sold separately
  • Not included per the page: test leads; carrying-case inclusion is not stated

Read this package list carefully against the ET310's: the page lists no adapters, no manual line in the key specifications and no case confirmation, so budget for what is missing. Its NCV receiver sensor and independent work light are the genuine kit-content advantages at this level. For model comparisons against Klein's ET350, see our ET350 vs 61-535 guide.

For dead network and low-voltage wiring: a tone-and-probe set

None of the breaker kits above is the right tool for de-energized network, telephone and data wiring. That job needs a tone generator and a probe, and Klein sells the two parts separately: the Toner-PRO generator (VDV500-063) and the Probe-PRO probe (VDV500-123).

  • Toner-PRO: five distinct tone cadences for pair identification, angled bed-of-nails clips, an RJ11 plug for telephone or RJ45 data jacks, continuity and polarity tests on LEDs, auto power-off, and 4 x AAA batteries included
  • Probe-PRO: the required receiving probe, sold separately, with a work light, adjustable volume, a 3.5 mm headphone jack (headphones not included), a terminal block to confirm the toned pair and a replaceable non-metallic conductive tip, with 4 x AAA batteries included
  • Battery life: the generator is specified at 120 hr and the probe at 25 hr

The kit trap here is the most basic one on this page: the Toner-PRO requires the separately sold Probe-PRO for wire tracing, so a "tone and probe kit" order that includes only one half is incomplete for that job. For Ethernet-specific testers with remotes and mapping, see our Ethernet cable tester guide.

Buying guide: check batteries, leads and support before the price

Order a breaker finder kit that is complete for the job
  1. List the connections you need

Outlet plug only, lighting fixture, bare wires, or insulated cable with no access to conductors: each needs a different included or optional accessory.

  2. Check the power-off requirement

If the circuit may be de-energized, the transmitter must have its own batteries: ET450 or Fluke 2000T, not the ET310 or 61-535.

  3. Read the included list on the maker's page

Count transmitters, receivers, adapters, leads, batteries, manual and case; treat anything not listed as not in the box.

  4. Budget for the separate accessories

69411 for ET310 fixture work, TL-532A for the 61-535, a second tone-and-probe half for the Klein set.

Batteries are a kit-contents line item, not a footnote. The ET310 includes one 9V for the receiver. The ET450 and Fluke 2062 include all required batteries; Fluke's count is 4 x AA for the receiver and 8 x AA for the transmitter. The two Klein tone-and-probe items each include 4 x AAA. Nothing here ships battery-free, but a bare-tool-style listing might; confirm on the maker's page.

Replacement parts decide the long-term value. Klein lists ET310TRANS (replacement transmitter), ET310CASE (replacement case) and VDV999-068 (replacement probe tip, sold separately) as service parts, and Fluke sells the 2000ACC as a replacement accessory kit for the 2052 and 2062. A kit with documented spares is cheaper to keep alive than one without.

Bare tool versus complete kit value. The ET310 versus ET310KIT split is the cleanest example: the finder is identical, and the kit adds adapters and a case. Pay for the bundle only when the adapters match the work; otherwise the standard package plus the 69411 later is the more flexible order.

Which jobs need a wire tracer instead? Following a wire route inside a wall, underground or through non-metallic conduit is tracer work: the ET450 traces through drywall, cement block and underground (with special procedures and limitations for metal conduit), while the Fluke 2062 offers a clamp-based alternative. A plug-in finder is not designed for route tracing. Panel and service-entrance work is not a kit decision at all; leave it to a licensed electrician, as every maker's warnings here instruct.

How we choose

We compared the makers' own product pages and manuals for the exact packages, checked November 5, 2026: Klein's ET310, ET450, 69411, Toner-PRO and Probe-PRO pages, Fluke's 2062 and 2000ACC pages, and IDEAL's 61-535 page. These are research-based recommendations; we have not physically tested the kits. Missing contents, such as the 61-535's unconfirmed case, are identified rather than guessed. Our selection method explains the process.

Verdict

Buy the package the job needs, using the maker's included list as the checklist. The Klein ET310 is the complete basic finder package; ET310KIT or the 69411 accessory kit adds fixture and bare-wire connections. The Klein ET450 is the best full tracing kit for the money-sensitive buyer because its documented contents are included, though tracing still depends on circuit conditions and return paths. The Fluke 2062 is the professional kit: its i400 clamp and 2000ACC lead kit cover the widest set of tracing scenarios, and the tracer is rated up to CAT IV 600 V. For dead network wiring, pair the Klein Toner-PRO and Probe-PRO. Compare the boxes before you compare the photos, and confirm current package contents on the maker's page before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What should a breaker finder kit actually include?

The baseline is a transmitter, a receiver and the batteries the receiver needs; Klein's ET310 package is exactly that. A full tracing kit should add connection accessories and storage: the ET450 lists blade and ground prongs, alligator clips, 3-foot and 20-foot lead adapters, AC plug leads, instructions, all required batteries and a hard carrying case. Anything beyond that, such as a signal-coupling clamp or a mapping remote, is specific to one job, so match the accessory to the work before paying for it.

Is a breaker finder kit the same as a circuit tracer kit?

The phrases overlap, but the capability differs. A breaker finder identifies which breaker or fuse feeds an outlet or fixture; a tracer follows wire routes and can work on de-energized circuits. The ET310 is a finder: its transmitter is powered by the connected 90-120V AC circuit. The ET450 and Fluke 2062 are tracer kits with battery-powered transmitters for both energized and de-energized tracing. Buy the tracing kit only when route-tracing or power-off work is on the list.

Do breaker finder kits include batteries?

It varies by package, which is exactly why the kit contents matter more than the photo. Klein says the ET310 includes a 9V battery for the receiver (the transmitter needs none). The ET450 kit and the Fluke 2062 kit both state that all required batteries are included. The Toner-PRO generator includes 4 x AAA batteries, but its required Probe-PRO probe is a separate purchase that includes its own 4 x AAA batteries. Check the exact package, not the model family.

Can I use a breaker finder kit with the power off?

Only kits with battery-powered transmitters. The ET310 transmitter is powered by the connected circuit, so it cannot work on a de-energized circuit. The ET450 and the Fluke 2000T transmitter both trace energized and de-energized circuits. For dead low-voltage and network wiring, a tone-and-probe set such as the Toner-PRO and Probe-PRO is the intended tool. Confirm the circuit state against the maker's instructions before connecting anything.

Which accessories are sold separately that buyers expect in the box?

Klein's 69411 accessory kit, with its light-socket adapter, alligator clip adapter and 3-prong to 2-prong grounding adapter, is separate from the standalone ET310 but bundled in ET310KIT. IDEAL's TL-532A adapter kit is likewise an optional accessory for the 61-535. Fluke's 2000ACC lead kit is included with the 2062 but is also sold separately as a replacement. Klein's replacement transmitter (ET310TRANS) and case (ET310CASE) are also separate items. The lesson: read the included list on the maker's page before comparing prices.
