For most indoor renovation projects, choose the Bosch GLM165-22: its color display, area and volume functions cover room measurements without a phone connection. Choose the GLM165-27C for Bluetooth recording in MeasureOn, or the Leica DISTO D2 (D2-2) for its folding corner reference and shorter minimum distance, after matching the US package below. These are recommendations from manufacturer documentation, with the accuracy conditions explained rather than treated as guarantees for every surface.

Best for most indoor projects: Bosch GLM165-22

Pick this for room lengths and material estimates when you are happy writing down the results. Bosch specifies a backlit color display, real-time distance measurement, area, volume and indirect calculations; its technical table explicitly says it is not connected. The point of the connected upgrade is the recording workflow and tilt sensor, not better headline distance accuracy.

Bosch’s GLM165-22 listing includes the instrument, belt clip, two AA batteries and pouch. The manual also documents an optional rechargeable lithium-ion pack; the AA package does not include that pack. Both red Bosch picks start at 6 in / 0.15 m, so choose something else for gaps below that specified minimum.

There is a documentation conflict: the GLM165-22 product narrative mentions haptic feedback, while Bosch’s quick-start chart leaves that model’s haptic row blank. We would not buy it specifically for vibration confirmation.

Best for recording room measurements: Bosch GLM165-27C

Choose the GLM165-27C when a measurement needs to end up on a room sketch or annotated photo. Bosch specifies Bluetooth transfer to MeasureOn and an inclinometer; the shared manual gives it the same typical distance range and accuracy as the GLM165-22. Bosch’s GLM165-27C listing includes the instrument, two AA batteries, belt clip and pouch.

MeasureOn supports Android and iOS phones and tablets, and Bosch says projects can be used offline with changes stored locally. Establish the tool connection inside the app. Bosch lists JPEG, PDF and XLS exports depending on the content, but its FAQ also describes PRO Export and PRO Cloud & Export: check the needed entitlement before choosing a tool around a deliverable.

The CG and CGL pages confirm those differences. A listing shortened to “Bosch 165” is not enough to identify the beam, connectivity or included battery.

Best for corners and short clearances: Leica DISTO D2, D2-2

Choose the newer D2 for its automatically detected folding endpiece and 0.05 m minimum distance. Leica’s current datasheet also lists Smart Room support, Smart Horizontal Mode, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC and memory for 30 results. Its manual says Bluetooth and NFC cannot be used simultaneously.

Order against US article 1017800, listed on that datasheet with the D2, pouch, hand loop, two AAA batteries, calibration certificate and documentation. The separate metric-only article is 1017801. The manual identifies the generation as D2-2; the familiar D2 name alone is insufficient.

Leica’s US web page still describes a 100 m instrument, and its US info sheet describes ten stored measurements despite its D2-2 filename. Those differ from the newer datasheet’s 150 m and 30 results. Verify the supplied article number and US availability; the newer figures here apply to the documented D2-2 package.

The trade-offs are IP54 protection versus the Bosch picks’ IP65, and an app whose manual describes in-app purchases for extra functions. Do not assume every DISTO Plan capability belongs to every D2 generation.

How we choose

We prioritize reference points, minimum distance, stated accuracy conditions, battery packages and the route from a reading to a useful room record. This shortlist comes from official product pages, manuals and ordering datasheets; we have no physical test results to report. We preserve the makers’ documentation conflicts because they affect what to order.

This guide covers indoor distance measurement and renovation records. For other renovation instruments, see our multimeter buying guide and non-contact voltage tester guide; our measurement policy explains the distinction between specifications and our own readings.

What matters before you buy

Reference points: where does the distance start?

Leica’s manual specifies front or rear reference, with rear as the standard setting. Select rear when the back of the tool rests against the starting wall; select front when its nose marks the start. The D2’s unfolded endpiece changes the zero point automatically, but check its position and contact with the edge.

Bosch’s manual separately requires the correct reference setting when using its tripod socket. An attachment does not make the mounting point interchangeable with the front or rear.

For resolution, Leica specifies 0.1 mm in metric mode and 1/32 in in fractional mode; these are separate display formats. Its favorable-condition accuracy is ±1.5 mm, so the final displayed digit is not an accuracy guarantee.

The distance starts at the front plane of the instrument. Place that plane at the intended starting edge.

Accuracy: keep the footnotes attached

Bosch’s typical ±1.6 mm figure has an additional ±0.05 mm/m influence in favorable conditions. In unfavorable conditions, its manual gives up to ±3.0 mm, plus 0.15 mm/m, citing extreme illumination, a badly reflecting surface or temperature far from 25 °C.

Leica’s D2-2 manual specifies favorable ±1.5 mm and unfavorable ±3 mm tolerances over 0.05–10 m, at 95% confidence. Above 10 m, the favorable-condition tolerance may deteriorate by 0.10 mm/m, or 0.2 mm/m above 100 m; the unfavorable-condition tolerance may deteriorate by 0.15 mm/m above 10 m. Its favorable conditions include a white, diffusely reflecting target, low background light and moderate temperature. Compare these conditions before treating the small difference between the headline tolerances as a deciding advantage.

Area, volume and indirect modes

Area and volume modes need the relevant side measurements: Leica’s manual shows length and width for area, plus a third dimension for volume. Our advice is to split an irregular room into manageable shapes and label each result. A computed area cannot tell you which wall or opening you intended to include.

For indirect measurement, follow the geometry shown for the selected function. Leica’s Pythagoras sequence uses a right-angle shot; its Smart Horizontal Mode calculates a horizontal distance from a measured slope length and angle. Prefer a direct distance where accessible, and keep the tool steady as the manuals require.

Visibility and difficult indoor surfaces

Bosch’s GLM165-27CG listing claims its green dot is up to 4X brighter than standard red beams; that is a manufacturer visibility claim. The CG retains the red C model’s headline range and distance accuracy. A backlit screen helps you read the result, while locating the dot on the target remains a separate problem.

Bosch warns of faulty readings on glass, polished metal, insulation and textured surfaces. Leica also warns about permeable or glossy targets and says dark surfaces increase measurement time. Reposition to a suitable target, keep the reception lens clear and repeat questionable measurements rather than accepting a plausible-looking result.

  • Yes: Room dimensions against a suitable visible target: the main reason to buy
  • Partly: Glass, glossy finishes or dark surfaces: inspect the target and repeat the reading
  • Partly: Bluetooth documentation: verify app compatibility and export entitlement
  • No: A finer displayed fraction: not proof of a tighter accuracy specification

A useful room record, and when a tape is enough

Our suggested workflow uses the reference settings, stable support and digital notes documented above:

Make the measurement useful later
  1. Name the endpoints

Record the room, wall or opening and the selected starting reference.

  2. Take and repeat the reading

Support the tool firmly and keep the same reference and target.

  3. Keep the context

Add the dimension to a labeled sketch or photo, including units.

  4. Check the handoff

Confirm that the saved or exported file contains the dimensions you need.

Keep a tape for a small item below the laser’s minimum distance, or a job without a suitable target. We would also use it to confirm critical cutting or fitting dimensions. If all you need is an occasional cabinet width and you already have a tape, that may be enough; buy the laser for the room-measuring and recording work you actually do.

Verdict

Get the GLM165-22 for straightforward indoor dimensions, and the GLM165-27C when MeasureOn recording will earn its place in your workflow. Choose the D2-2, US article 1017800, for its corner endpiece and shorter minimum, after checking the exact supply. The starting reference, target and saved context deserve as much attention as the specified range.

Frequently asked questions

Is a laser measure displaying 1/32 in accurate to 1/32 in?

No. Display increments and specified accuracy are different. Bosch lists a lowest indication of 1/32 in but typical distance accuracy of ±1/16 in for these models, with further condition-dependent terms. Its rounding button changes the displayed fraction. Use the accuracy specification and its conditions when deciding whether a reading is suitable for the job.

Does Bluetooth mean free floor-plan export?

No. The GLM165-27C transfers measurements to Bosch MeasureOn, but Bosch separately describes PRO Export and PRO Cloud & Export features. Leica’s current D2 works with DISTO Plan; its manual describes in-app purchases for extended functionality. Before choosing either connected model, install the app and check the exact export format and plan you need.

Is a green laser measure more accurate than a red one?

Beam visibility and distance accuracy are separate specifications. Bosch’s GLM165-27CG green model has the same headline ±1/16 in accuracy and 165 ft range as the red GLM165-27C. Bosch claims a brighter visible dot for green. Choose green when locating the dot is the problem; do not infer a tighter measurement tolerance from its color.

Which Leica DISTO D2 generation should I buy?

For the recommendation here, match the D2-2 datasheet and US article 1017800. It specifies a 150 m favorable-condition range, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC and memory for 30 measurements. Leica’s US product page still describes a 100 m D2, and its US info sheet lists ten stored measurements. Confirm the supplied article number and local availability before ordering.
