For indoor projects — room dimensions, paint, flooring, cabinet clearances — the home class is the right buy, and the Bosch GLM165-22 is the model most people should get. Pay up for a pro model such as the Bosch GLM400 CL or the Leica DISTO X6 when you measure outdoors at long range, in dust and rain, or when your measurements must end up documented in an app. Indoor accuracy is a wash: typical tolerances are ±1/16 in (±1.6 mm) on the GLM165-22, ±1.5 mm on the D2, ±1/16 in (±1.5 mm) on the GLM400 CL and ±1.0 mm on the X6. Recommendations are based on manufacturer specifications and datasheets, checked November 4, 2026.

Best home laser measure: Bosch GLM165-22
Buy this for the classic indoor jobs. Bosch specifies a typical range of 6 in–165 ft (0.15–50 m), typical accuracy of ±1/16 in (±1.6 mm), a backlit color display, real-time measurement, and area, volume and indirect functions — all without a phone connection. The GLM165-22 listing includes the instrument, belt clip, two AA batteries and pouch.
- Protection: IP65 per Bosch's shared red-model manual
- Two AA batteries; the manual documents an optional rechargeable lithium-ion pack that the AA package does not include
- The accuracy figure carries conditions: favorable conditions add ±0.05 mm/m, and unfavorable ones (extreme light, poor surfaces, temperature far from 25 °C) go up to ±3 mm plus 0.15 mm/m
The trade-offs: no Bluetooth, a 6 in minimum distance, and a headline range that assumes favorable conditions. Our indoor roundup covers this model and its siblings in detail.

Best home pick for corners and app transfer: Leica DISTO D2 (D2-2)
Choose the D2 when you measure into corners and short clearances, or want your readings in an app. The current datasheet specifies a 0.05–150 m favorable range (0.05–80 m unfavorable), ±1.5 mm favorable accuracy, memory for 30 measurements, Bluetooth 6.0 and NFC, and an automatically detected multifunctional folding endpiece. It runs on two AAA batteries.
- Order against US article 1017800; the metric-only article is 1017801
- Works with the DISTO Plan app (iOS and Android) and DISTO Transfer for Windows; the manual describes in-app purchases for extended functions, and says Bluetooth and NFC cannot be used simultaneously
- IP54, dust- and splash-water protected — a step below the Bosch GLM165 family's IP65
One warning we carry over from our roundup: Leica's US product page and US info sheet still describe an older 100 m D2 with memory for ten, so buy by article number, not by the web page. See the D2 generation check in our roundup.

Best pro pick for long outdoor shots: Bosch GLM400 CL
This is the GLM400 CL, Bosch's 400 ft connected model with a camera. Its product page specifies measuring up to 400 ft with accuracy up to ±1/16 in, an adjustable zoom camera to locate the laser spot outdoors, an integrated rechargeable 3.6 V lithium-ion battery, an inclinometer with a 360° range, a backlit color display with reinforced screen glass, 11 measuring functions, the last 50 measurements in the tool, and storage for over 600 images. The page also notes its 3.6 V lithium-ion battery and a warranty of one year, with an additional year when registered within eight weeks of purchase.
- Bluetooth transfers measurements to the free-to-download MeasureOn app; note that photo files are too large to transfer, per Bosch
- The manual gives a typical measuring range of 3 in–400 ft (0.08–122 m), dropping to 196 ft (60 m) under unfavorable conditions; typical accuracy is ±1/16 in (±1.5 mm), or ±1/10 in (±3 mm) unfavorable
- Its degree of protection is IP54 (dust and splash water protected), lower than the smaller GLM165 family's IP65 — long range and camera come before sealing here
- The technical data table lists IP54, red laser (650 nm, <1 mW), 0.46 lb weight, and charging in about 5.5 hours over Micro USB
The GLM400 C (without the L) is the AA-battery version: same 400 ft range and ±1/16 in accuracy, a 5.0-megapixel digital viewfinder, 0.35 lb, and a hand strap, three AA batteries and pouch in the box — but no lithium-ion battery or charger. Check which suffix you are ordering.
Best pro pick for brutal jobsites: Leica DISTO X6
The X6 is the pick when the tool gets dropped, hosed and rained on. Leica's X6 datasheet specifies IP65 — dust tight and jet-water protected — plus a 2 m drop test, ±1.0 mm accuracy with 0.1 mm resolution under favorable conditions, a range of 0.05–250 m favorable / 0.05–150 m unfavorable, and accuracy and range according to ISO 16331-1. Its user manual specifies a 3-hour charging time.
- A 2.8-inch IPS touchscreen with scratch-proof lens, a side DIST key, and gesture-triggered measurements
- X-Range Power Technology and a Digital Pointfinder with 4-fold zoom for outdoor targeting
- Memory for 300 reports and 1,000 captured 3D points; a Li-Ion 2 000 mAh rechargeable battery for up to 4,000 measurements / 8 hours; USB-C charging and data
- Bluetooth 5.0 with keyboard mode, DISTO Plan app for iOS and Android, and DISTO Transfer for Windows
- Storage from −25 to 70 °C; operation from −10 to 55 °C
The trade-offs: at 230 g it is the heaviest pick here; charging is via USB; the P2P functions with the DST 360-X adapter are a separate accessory; and the favorable accuracy tolerance applies from 0.05 to 10 m at 95% confidence, with possible deterioration above 10 m per the manual. Order article 950909 for the X6 with pouch, USB-C cable, hand loop, documentation and calibration certificate, or the P2P package (950878) with the DST 360-X adapter, tripod and target plate.

When is the pro model worth the upgrade?
The camera or pointfinder is the real pro unlock. Beyond roughly 150 ft outdoors in full sun, a red laser dot is hard to find by eye, and past that distance it is effectively invisible — which is why Bosch and Leica fit the pro outdoor models with a camera or pointfinder. The GLM400 CL's zoom camera and the X6's 4-fold-zoom Digital Pointfinder exist to solve exactly that, and both makers say so. No home-class pick here has a camera or digital viewfinder.
Range is the second reason. A 165 ft home tool covers most rooms and interiors. Once you stake out foundations, driveways, elevations or long exteriors, 250 m favorable on the X6 is a different tool class. But read the unfavorable column, not the headline: the X6 falls to 150 m unfavorable and the GLM400 CL to 196 ft.
Protection and documentation come third. The X6's IP65 and 2 m drop test are for tools that live in a jobsite bag. The pro models' app workflows (MeasureOn, DISTO Plan with memory for 300 reports, keyboard mode, DXF capture with the DST 360-X) matter only if someone else reads your numbers. If you write them down, save the money.
- Partly: Your shots are indoors and under 50 m | Home class: GLM165-22 or D2
- Yes: You shoot outdoors past ~30 m in sunlight | Pro: you need the camera or Pointfinder
- Yes: The tool gets dropped, dusted or rained on | Pro: X6's IP65 and 2 m drop test
- Yes: Measurements must reach an app or report | Any connected model; check the app's included functions
When pro money is wasted: buying an X6 to measure living rooms. It is heavier, needs charging, and its indoor tolerance advantage over the GLM165-22 is smaller than the conditions attached to either figure.
Buying guide: read the spec sheet like a pro
Typical accuracy is a conditional number. Each maker's figure assumes a white, diffusely reflecting target, weak backlighting and moderate temperature; each manual adds distance-proportional terms and worse tolerances for unfavorable conditions, and the X6 states its tolerance applies from 0.05 to 10 m at 95% confidence. Leica's accuracy and range are specified according to ISO 16331-1, the standard for laser distance meters.
Match the IP rating and drop test to the job, not the price. The GLM400 CL is the priciest Bosch here yet carries IP54, while Bosch rates the smaller GLM165-22 IP65. Protection and price are not the same axis.
Check the reference point and minimum distance. The D2's folding endpiece is detected automatically; the X6's endpiece is multifunctional; the GLM400 CL measures from 3 in and the GLM165-22 from 6 in. Short minimums matter for interior clearances.
Match the battery system to your day. AA and AAA home models swap batteries on site; the GLM400 CL charges in about 5.5 hours over Micro USB, and the X6 charges over USB-C for up to 4,000 measurements. Cold-weather storage limits differ too: the X6 stores from −25 to 70 °C.
List what you actually measure
Rooms and interiors point home; exteriors, grading or long shots point pro.
Find the dot
Past roughly 30 m in sunlight you need a camera or pointfinder; otherwise the beam is invisible.
Read the conditions columns
Favorable-range and typical-accuracy numbers assume ideal targets, light and temperature.
Match the workflow

How we choose
We compared maker product pages, datasheets and manuals, checked November 4, 2026: Bosch's GLM400 CL and GLM400 C product pages and the GLM400CL owner's manual; Leica's DISTO X6 and D2-2 datasheets; and the site's existing GLM165 and D2 research. These are research-based recommendations; we have not physically tested the tools. Where makers publish conflicting figures for the same model, we name the conflict instead of choosing one. Our selection method explains the process.
Winter job-site and holiday-project examples
A cold-weather exterior shoot shows the fork plainly: the X6 operates from −10 to 55 °C and stores from −25 to 70 °C and is dust tight and jet-water protected to IP65 — while the home D2 carries IP54 and Bosch rates the GLM165-22 IP65. Leica says an IP65 DISTO can be cleaned under running water, but on its X4 page; the X6 datasheet itself lists dust-tight and jet-water protection. For a long, sunlit shot across a driveway or roofline, the GLM400 CL's camera locates a dot that a 165 ft tool cannot see. And for the classic holiday-project cluster — paint quantities, floor area, a cabinet run — a GLM165-22 or D2 does the whole job without the charging cable. Our gifts for electricians guide covers tools that measure for the tradespeople on your list.
Verdict
Buy the Bosch GLM165-22 for indoor home projects, or the Leica DISTO D2 (D2-2) when corners, a 0.05 m minimum and app transfer matter. Step up to the Bosch GLM400 CL when you shoot outdoors at distance and need to see the dot, and to the Leica DISTO X6 when the job site is brutal and the numbers must survive it in a report. Do not buy pro range, pro sealing or pro workflows you will not use — indoor accuracy is the same class on both sides of the fork.
Frequently asked questions
Is a pro laser measure more accurate than a home model?
Not enough to matter indoors. The home picks specify typical accuracy of ±1/16 in (±1.5–1.6 mm); the Leica X6 specifies ±1.0 mm favorable, and the home-class accuracy figures carry their own target, light and temperature conditions. The pro money buys range, protection and documentation, not a different class of indoor tolerance. Read each accuracy figure together with its conditions rather than comparing single numbers.
What does the IP rating on a laser measure mean?
It is the maker's dust and water protection marking. Bosch states IP54 (dust and splash-water protected) for the GLM400 CL; Bosch lists IP65 for the GLM165 family, and Leica states IP65, dust tight and jet-water protected, for the DISTO X6. All are the makers' specifications. Higher numbers do not mean a tougher drop rating: drop testing is specified separately, such as the X6's 2 m drop test.
Do I need Bluetooth on a laser measure?
Only if you record measurements anywhere other than the tool. Bluetooth moves readings to an app such as Bosch MeasureOn or Leica DISTO Plan. The GLM165-22 has no wireless connection and shows the last measurements on the tool only. Also check what is included: Bosch describes the MeasureOn app as free to download and use, while Leica describes DISTO Plan as basically free but with in-app purchases to extend functionality; photo files are too large to transfer from the GLM400 CL.
How far does a home laser measure actually reach outdoors?
Less than its headline number once conditions are unfavorable. The Bosch GLM165 family's typical 165 ft range assumes favorable conditions, and the manual warns that its measuring range may be limited under unfavorable conditions without publishing a smaller numeric range; the GLM400 CL manual pairs its typical 400 ft with 196 ft unfavorable, and the DISTO X6 datasheet gives 0.05–250 m favorable but 0.05–150 m unfavorable. Bright sun and weak targets, not the label, set the outdoor limit.
