For most DIYers on your list, the Bosch BLAZE GLM165-22 is the laser measure to gift: a color display, 11 measuring functions, replaceable AA batteries and an IP65 rating, with no app to set up before the first measurement. For a stocking stuffer, the Leica DISTO D2 (D2-2) folds a full Bluetooth laser measure into a pocket-size body; for outdoorsy recipients step up to the Bosch GLM400C with its camera viewfinder; and for a pro, the Leica DISTO X6 is the rugged touchscreen upgrade. All recommendations here come from maker product pages, manuals and data sheets, checked November 4, 2026; we have not physically tested these tools.

For a deeper tool-by-tool comparison of the indoor models, see our best laser measures guide; if your recipient's work is electrical rather than layout, our multimeter buying guide and gifts for electricians may fit better.
Stocking stuffer: Leica DISTO D2 (D2-2)
The D2 is the gift that fits in a stocking and still does real work. Leica's D2 data sheet lists a folding endpiece with automatic detection (so corner measurements reference themselves), a 0.05 m minimum distance, ±1.5 mm accuracy under favourable conditions, Bluetooth 6.0 and NFC, and memory for 30 measurements. It runs on two AAA batteries — Leica specifies up to 7’000 measurements per set — which makes it immediately usable on gift morning.
Order against art. 1017800 for U.S., whose documented scope of delivery is the D2, pouch, hand loop, batteries, calibration certificate and documentation. Leica's US product page still describes an older 100 m D2 with fewer stored measurements, so the article number and generation are the reliable order identifiers; our indoor laser measure guide works through that conflict in detail.

Best gift for most DIYers: Bosch BLAZE GLM165-22
The GLM165-22 is the default gift: everything a homeowner measuring rooms, rugs and garden beds needs, nothing they have to configure. Bosch's GLM165-22 page lists 11 measuring functions including real-time length, area, volume and indirect measurements, accuracy up to ±1/16 In., 165 Ft. range, an IP65 rating and a rounding button that snaps readings to the fraction the project needs. The box includes the tool, belt clip, two AA batteries and a pouch, so it is usable within minutes of unwrapping.
Two gift-relevant cautions. First, this is the non-connected model: the readings live on the tool and in the recipient's notes, not in an app. Second, Bosch flags an accuracy deviation on stakeout functionality for products with certain date codes — worth knowing if your recipient's gift would be used for repeated equal spacing.

Best gift for bright light: Bosch BLAZE GLM165-27CG (and the model maze)
If your recipient measures in sunlit rooms, hallways with glare or outdoors at close range, the green-beam GLM165-27CG is the thoughtful version of the same gift. Bosch's GLM165-27CG page says the green beam generates a point/dot that's up to 4X brighter than standard red beams, with the same ±1/16-in accuracy, 165-ft range and IP65 rating, plus Bluetooth to the free MeasureOn app and an inclinometer. The package includes the tool, belt clip, two AA batteries and pouch.

Bosch lists "Works With: Battery, GBA37V10" across this BLAZE family — on the AA models the rechargeable pack is optional and bought separately, while the GLM165-27CGL package includes one. A listing that just says "Bosch 165" is not enough to know which of the four you are gifting.
Best big-gift outdoor upgrade: Bosch GLM400C
The GLM400C is the under-the-tree gift for someone who measures across yards, driveways and long interiors — because its problem is not distance but seeing the dot. Bosch's GLM400C page describes a 5.0 megapixel digital viewfinder with adjustable zoom to locate the laser spot at far distances, even outdoors, plus Bluetooth and the free MeasureOn app, an inclinometer, a digital bubble level, 11 measuring functions, storage for up to 50 measurements, accuracy up to ±1/16 In. and up to 400 Ft. distance. The manual's technical data gives the fuller picture: a typical range of 3 in–400 ft (0.08–122 m), ±1/16 in (±1.5 mm) typical accuracy, and — the honest footnote — 196 ft (60 m) under unfavorable conditions.
The box includes the tool, hand strap, three AA batteries and a pouch. Its IP54 rating is a step down from the 165 ft BLAZE models' IP65, and the beam is red — the viewfinder is what makes it usable at long range, not beam brightness.
The GLM400CL is the lithium-ion sibling: the same 400 ft range, viewfinder and functions, but with an integrated rechargeable 3.6V lithium-ion battery, a micro USB cable and a charger in the box, plus storage for over 600 images on the tool. Gift the CL to someone who would resent feeding it AAs; gift the C to someone who wants batteries replaceable on Christmas Day. Note Bosch's own caveat on the CL: photo files are too large to transfer.
Best pro upgrade: Leica DISTO X6
For a tradesperson or surveyor's assistant, the X6 is the gift that survives the job. Leica's X6 data sheet specifies IP65 (dust tight and jet water protected), drop tested from 2 meters, a 2.8-inch IPS touchscreen with scratch-proof lens, a digital pointfinder with 4-fold zoom, a 360° tilt sensor, Bluetooth 5.0, and memory for 300 reports. Its range and accuracy follow ISO 16331-1: ±1.0 mm accuracy and 0.05–250 m / 0.16–820 ft range with favourable conditions (tolerances apply from 0.05 m to 10 m with a confidence level of 95%), 2.0 mm and 0.05–150 m unfavorable.
Two gift-planning notes. The standard package, art. no. 950909, includes the tool, pouch, USB-C cable, hand loop and calibration certificate — but the P2P measuring functions need the separately sold DST 360-X adapter (the P2P package, art. 950878, bundles the adapter, TRI 120 tripod and GZM 3 target plate). And the battery is Li-Ion, USB-C charged — no AAs — so charge it before wrapping if you want it to work out of the box.

How we choose
We ranked these gifts from maker documentation only: Bosch's US product pages and the GLM400C and GLM400CL user manuals, and Leica's current D2 and X6 data sheets, all checked November 4, 2026. The deciding criteria were gift fit — recipient match, readiness out of the box, battery strategy — plus range, stated accuracy and its conditions, protection ratings and memory. We have not physically tested these tools, and we preserve the makers' documentation conflicts rather than smoothing them over. Our selection method explains the process.
Gift-buying guide: range, screens, units and traps
Range by recipient. Bosch's own US laser-measure catalog sorts its current lineup into 100 ft, 165 ft and 400 ft classes; Leica's D2 and X6 sit at 150 m and 250 m favourable-condition ranges. Rooms, materials and decks are 165 ft work. Fencelines, site walks and building exteriors justify the 400 ft and 250 m picks — with their viewfinders, because a red dot at that distance is invisible to the eye in daylight.
Screen and units. Every pick here has a backlit display (the X6's is a 2.8-inch touchscreen); every one displays metric and imperial, with Bosch's rounding button choosing fractional display like 1/32 in and Leica specifying 0.1 mm resolution. For a recipient who works only in inches, any of these will display it — the gift difference is the rounding button and the app, not the units.
Readiness. Two AA (or AAA, or three AA) batteries in the box mean the tool works during the holidays without shopping. The X6 needs a charge first; the GLM400CL needs its charger, which is included.
Match the recipient
Rooms and DIY: a 165 ft BLAZE or the D2. Outdoors: GLM400C. Trade work: the DISTO X6.
Decode the model
Red, green, connected and battery variants share names: match the suffix and part number before ordering.
Check the box
Batteries and pouch are documented for the other picks; charge the X6 before wrapping; apps are free downloads.
What not to gift. Golf and hunting laser rangefinders are not the same tool: they are built to flagsticks and game animals, not area, volume and indirect room measurements, and they typically lack a back edge reference and a folding endpiece. A tape-measure-shaped "laser tape" from an unknown brand also skips the accuracy statements and protection ratings that every pick here documents.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday checklist. Sales rotate model names, so buy by identity, not by discount size: the exact model suffix (22, 27C, 27CG, 27CGL), the Leica article number (1017800 for the US D2; 950909 for the X6), the Bosch part number printed on the tool (3601K72F10 for the GLM400C), and the documented box contents above — batteries, pouch, charger. If a deal drops the charger or batteries from the kit, the gift is less ready than the maker's own package. Our Bosch Black Friday guide covers the same checklist discipline for tools in general.
- Yes: Every pick: backlit display and documented batteries in the box
- Yes: Bosch 165 ft picks: IP65; X6: IP65 and 2 m drop testing
- Yes: Connected picks: free apps (MeasureOn, DISTO Plan) with no tool-side setup
- No: X6: Li-Ion battery needs charging before gift morning; P2P needs a separate adapter
- Partly: GLM400C/CL: IP54 only — fine for most outdoor measuring, lower than the BLAZE 165 ft rating
Verdict
Gift the GLM165-22 to most DIYers, the DISTO D2 (D2-2) as the stocking stuffer, the GLM165-27CG when bright light makes red dots hard to find, the GLM400C for the big-property outdoor upgrade, and the DISTO X6 for a pro who will put it to work every day. Order by exact model, article or part number, check the box contents against the maker pages above, and keep the warranty registration inside its eight-week window. Frequently asked questions
Is a laser measure a good holiday gift?
Yes, when it matches the recipient's work. A base model like the GLM165-22 needs no phone and covers rooms with area and volume functions, so it works straight out of the pouch on two AA batteries. A viewfinder or green-beam model suits someone measuring outdoors. What makes it feel like a gift rather than a chore is readiness: the makers document batteries and a pouch for the other picks, while the X6 standard package includes a USB-C cable and pouch but no charger or batteries — charge it before wrapping.
How much range does a gift laser measure need?
For rooms, paint, flooring and a deck, a 165 ft model is already more than enough, and Bosch's own catalog sorts its US laser measures into 100 ft, 165 ft and 400 ft classes. The 400 ft class earns its keep outdoors, where the laser dot becomes hard to see: that is what the GLM400C's camera viewfinder and the DISTO X6's digital pointfinder are for. Note that makers quote shorter unfavorable-condition ranges, such as 196 ft (60 m) for the GLM400C, in bright sun or on poorly reflecting targets.
What is the difference between red and green Bosch BLAZE gifts?
Beam color changes visibility, not accuracy. Bosch lists the same ±1/16 in accuracy and 165 ft range for the green GLM165-27CG as for the red GLM165-27C, and claims a dot up to 4X brighter than standard red beams. Choose green when the recipient struggles to find a red dot on bright walls or outdoors; choose a viewfinder model when distance, not color, is the problem.
Should I register a gifted laser measure's warranty?
Yes, and check the timing. Bosch covers measuring and layout tools with a one-year limited warranty plus an additional year when the tool is registered within eight weeks of purchase. Leica's X6 data sheet offers a 3-year warranty (2 years on the Li-Ion battery) when registered at www.disto.com/warranty within 8 weeks of purchase. A holiday gift bought in November can pass the deadline before the tree comes down, so wrap the receipt or register it together with the recipient.
